Returning JPG from PS3 not in LR Catalog

I have just upgraded from LR version 2.1 to 2.2 and am experiencing a problem with PS3 jpgs not automatically being placed in the LR catalog.

With v2.1 and earlier, when I exported a DNG file to PS3 for edit, a TIFF file was created in the LR catalog and that TIFF file opened in PS3. Then, when I would save the file in PS3 as a jpg after I was done editing the image, that saved jpg edit would automatically populate in my LR catalog and appear immediately adjacent to the DNG and TIFF versions of that image.

Now with v2.2, the jpg version is saved in the appropriate Windows folder but does not populate my LR catalog. I must manually import the jpeg file into LR in order to see it in my catalog. Major inconvenience!

Any thoughts on how I can get PS3 jpgs to populate in my LR catalog without having to manually re-import them? Thanks.

That should be working, Do you have any filters on?

Yes, in CS3 I choose "Save as" to save as a jpg instead of the tiff sent over from LR. If I choose "Save" CS3 will save the tiff w/o giving me the option to save as a jpeg. The folder indicated in the CS3 "save as" dialog is the folder that contains the original image.

No filters are on in LR. Thanks.

Back a step...
Is PS the primary or secondary editor?
And which version of ACR do you have installed in CS3?
Have you updated CS3 to 1'.'.1?

Yes, the idea is that I want the jpg version of the picture back in LR after my CS3 edit. I am a competitive swimming photographer and process alot of photos for printing after a swim meet. I prefer jpgs over tiff for their small size and much less hard drive footprint.

I just ran my CS3 "updater" and have v 1'.'.1. LR is v2.2.

Out of curiosity, tell me Sid and Victoria, are you able to export a photo to CS3/4, save as a jpg and have that jpg automatically visible in your LR catalog? I'm wondering if it's just my local setup or if it's a LR 2.2 issue. Again, I had no problem at all with 2.1.

Alternatively, how can I "downgrade" back to LR 2.1 if 2.2 is the problem? Thanks.

Update:

The problem is not with saving in jpg, it's saving in any name other that the name of the photo exported to CS3.

If I send a photo from LR called "Swim" to CS3, it will open in CS3 as "Swim-edit.tif". If I save under this name, the editted photo is reflected in LR. However, if I change the name to "Swim-edit2.tif" and then save, the photo does not automatically appear in LR but is found in the windows folder next to the dng and original tif versions.

When you "Edit is PS" (round trip an image) you have to use "save" to get the image to come back.
And once the image thumbnail is updated in LR, you can export it as a jpg. This is by design.

The problem is not with saving in jpg, it's saving in any name other that the name of the photo exported to CS3.

When you "Edit in PS" the following happens - LR duplicates the file, sets up a thumbnail, and notes the links and info' in the catalog.

If you use "save" then PS updates the image (it has not moved), LR detects the image update and then updates the thumbnail.
If you use "save as " then PS places the image elsewhere, LR does not detect this and then you have to import the new file to LR.

I think that this basic logic has been the case since LRV1.' - yes there have been some changes.

The best way to get what you want is .....

Select the image in LR,
Do as much editing and correction in LR as possible,
"Edit in PS" (if you have to), when PS opens - perform the changes that you want, then "save" (NOT "save as") and close PS, or switch back to LR.

The edited image should be stacked next to the original (depends on a few things.)
Then you can export the image as a jpeg file.

BTW If you are using jpg files to save space then you are sacrificing quality, drives and memory are very inexpensive, buy more space, and run a proper backup.

By performing "save as", you are inadvertently breaking out of LR controlled locations, you will also need to be aware that "digging around" in the file structure where your images live will only cause you grief. Things will go missing, or worse.

To get the easiest run at this, LR should be the focus of your images, metadata and printing.
BTW Many people do not use PS as an editor, just LR.

Yes, but it depends on how you do it.

If CS3/4 is set to Primary External Editor, LR can throw the raw data and the hooks to bring it back again. That is opened directly into PS without saving an interim file. You can save that as whatever format (i.e. jpeg) and with whatever name you like, in whatever folder you like, and when you close it and go back to LR, it should have automatically been added.

If CS3/4 is set to Secondary External Editor, or if the ACR version is too old, then LR has to create a Tiff, which should be added to your catalog, and then opened into PS. If you then resaved that Tiff with another name or format, LR won't know.

Does that make more sense?

How does the behaviour you're seeing fit within that?

So Sid and Victoria, it sounds like you're each on the opposite side of my dilemma. Sid, you say that LR is NOT designed to recognize a returning file from CS3 whose name has changed, and Victoria, you say that if LR is set up as the primary editor LR should indeed "hook" the image back into the LR catalog despite the name change.

My experience is the latter. Again, up until last week LR v2.1 would indeed hook the image back into LR despite the name change, but now it won't.

Under Preferences --> External Editing, only "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS3" section is filled in; the "Additional Editor" section is blank, so I assume that I'm still setup for CS3 as the primary editor.

Victoria, you mention that one might have a problem if the ACR is too old. Tell me, what is the ACR and how would I know if it's too old? I have run the updater on both LR and PS and both are fully current. You're right: when I export from LR a TIF is created in LR before the export. How can I go about updating my ACR?

Lastly, Sid you are right about doing most of the editing in LR. I shoot the bulk of my swimming photos at ISO 16'' w/o a flash and need to process my images through a dedicated professional noise reduction program. I use Imagenomic which is only available as a plug-in for PS -- it works miracles! Also, I believe that PS does a better job of sharpening the images than LR. I don't have any heartburn processing 5x7s and 8x1's as jpgs, but for anything larger -- certainly my 6 x 3 foot lifesize images -- I do indeed stick to tif.

Thanks.

ACR is Adobe Camera Raw and the last version for CS3 was 4.6. You can check by opening a raw file in Bridge or PS and finding the preferences and it should say in the window title bar. Or you can download ACR 4.6 from Adobe's website and follow the instructions to install.

Other thing you could try is resetting the warning dialogs - there's a button in preferences. There was a warning dialog that reappeared with 2.2 that warned about not being compatible with ACR 4.6 and gave a few options including 'Render with LR' and 'Open Anyway'. You may have checked the 'do not display again' and pressed Render with LR, in which case you want the dialog back to be able to go back to 'Open Anyway'.

Victoria, you're beyond Guru, you're a LR Genius! Resetting the warnings did the trick; "Open anyway" fixed the problem completely :D

Tell me, from a quality point of view, what is the difference between choosing Open Anyway and Render w/ LR? If Open Anyway is selected, it sounds as if some of the LR editing data/ color correction/ etc is lost in the transfer. If so, it appears to be a no-brainer to choose Render with LR and work with the few bugs and inconveniences inherent with this choice. Thanks again.
