Restore to earlier catalog

By mistake, I was trying to tidy up! I have removed some photos from Lightroom, I can of course just import them again.

Can I revert back to an older catalog and somehow import them or the settings from there, so I do not lose all the develop adjustments I did?

You can use "import from catalog" to do that.
Just import from a back up catalog.
