resizing

I sometimes take a "tourist" shot while in RAW. I'd like to reduce the file size quite a bit and save the smaller file, keeping all the original meta-data (other than those that have changed!).

I know how to do this in PS. I also know I could use Export, but that's like making a copy, editing the copy, deleting the original and replacing it with the edited copy. that's a lot of steps!

Possible?
Or maybe there's an add-on?
Or maybe a non-LR solution?

Hi Michael,

You're not missing anything - there isn't a way to swap the raw file for a smaller jpeg as it goes absolutely against the whole point of Lightroom, which is non-destructive editing (and that's pretty destructive! )

If you absolutely want to do that, I'd make a collection of the images to make them easy to find again, export to the size you want, check the 'add to catalog' box in the Export dialog, and then delete the originals from the collection when you're done.

That said, I'd just recommend buying a bigger hard drive, otherwise it's like you're throwing away your negatives.

I do understand the principle of non-destructive editing, but believe me that the ones I intend to make into small jpeg's won't result in a loss to anyone.
And, I appreciate your workflow suggestion. I'll try it out.

[/quote]My camera (Pentax) can create a DNG and a JPEG for every photo taken. I import both files into Lightroom and keep which ever I choose. Page 56 of your user manual indicates that this is an option for your D3'' too. I also have a button on the camera that if I am in RAW only mode when pressed, will produce just a JPEG for the next shot only. Is there a similar switch on your Nikon?

Yes, I can take a jpeg and a RAW, but I think that would result in more work and confusion on my part. There aren't that many of these shots where I forgot to shift to normal jpg, so it would be more work to select RAW or JPG for every shot. I'm in Montana this week and I'm shooting around 15' images per day.

And, I don't think there is a button that would make the next shot a JPG on the D3''. I'll check because it would be nice....

[/quote]With my Pentax, I started out JPEG using the button capture the really 'important' shots in DNG. Quickly figured out that I never new in advance when thos 'important' shots were coming up. I switched to DNG to use the button to generate a JPEG for the generic photo. I found out that the DNG files took a long time to render so that I could review. (And this was before LR). When I got the K2'D I had half again as many pixels as I have with the K1'D, so I started taking both. Primarily to do a quick review after I get out of the camera. The intention was to throw away the JPEGs after I used them to cull my daily shoot. I discovered that often the JPEG was 'Good enough' and I did not need to bother working with the DNG. Now in LR, I still use the KPEGS for a quick review to mark rejects, before I hit the DNGs. I'm sure that sometime I will eliminate these JPEGs that are a companion to a DNG file. Storage is far from becomming a problem and as I last checked I had over 2''GB cataloged in LR.

Try it once or twice. I think you will find that with LR, it is a lot quicker to sort through 15' JPEGs a day than to convert NEFs to DNG and review from that point. Do not make the mistake of treating the camera JPEGS as sidecar files. Then they are not accessable in LR.

You can configure the FUNC, DOF Preview, and/or the AE-L/AF-L button to do that on the D7''. I'd bet the D3'' is similar.
