Resizing to 75 Kb

This is a newbie question. I need to upload a photo [2848 X 4272] to my wife's Classroom website. The requirements are: "1. approximately 314 pixels wide (the height does not matter) and 2. smaller than 75 Kilobytes" . Any resizing I am able to do renders the photo unacceptable when viewed on line. I have tried to resize in PS CS4 but apparently do not know what I am doing! Can you help?

If setting the Export width to 314 renders the 4272 pixel wide photo unacceptable (as well it might), then your only other choice to reduce the number of pixels to meet the website restrictions is to crop the photo to leave the most critical parts of the image. You don't need to crop to the 314 width restriction, just to a smaller image that when resized will still produce acceptable results.

What you are trying to do now is reduce the 12Mp photo to a '.65Mp size and it just won't give you a useful image.

I second Cletus, 314 pixels wide is about right for clip-art and icons. This won't help, but it's not your fault, that's a pretty strict (I'd say absurdly so) requirement.

If you do the math, fundamentally you're discarding at least 9 of every 1' pixels in each direction.

Have you seen any other images on the same site? How do they compare?

Try using Jeffrey Friedl's Metadata Wrangler export plug-in to eliminate the embedded preview, in addition to checking the "minimize embedded metadata" box in the Export dialog. That should help considerably.

I think PS's save for web will also remove any extraneous data

Forgive me... but I'm not understanding people's objection...

I took a random 2848 X 4272 photo, exported it with a 314px with, a jpg quality of 55, at 72dpi, and it came out at 65k...

So what's wrong???
