Same problem here. Cleaning up the catalog by removing files that were flagged "reject" and not on the HDDs any longer.

In LR Grid view, show "all images"
Filter by "rejected only"
Select all, Cmd+backspace > Remove
Lightroom deselects all, then goes on to "remove" and stalls after the progress bar got at about 1'%.
Force quit LR, second try identical.

Updated LR from 2.3 to 2.4
Same problem
Tried the same on a recent backup catalog. Same result.

Finally managed to get rid of the rejected & deleted images by using "Sync folder", and it appears I might have found the problem (but not yet the solution):

LR somehow "remembers" 19' images from an old shoot: These images were also in LR in a different folder. Removing that folder from LR didn't give an error, but didn't solve the issue.

Here's a screenshot. Images no the right are actually on the HDD. Images on the left (represented by "empty" thumbnails) are *not* in the LR catalog. LR also knows this, as it will not show the folder of the "ghost images" in the library.

The "empty" thumbnails and corresponding thumbs in the bottom are gray until you mouse over them or scroll...

Images either on external HDDs or on secondary internal HDD. LR catalog on secondary internal HDD.
Mounting / unmounting of the externals makes no difference.

For the rest LR is working fine. No error messages. Catalog back ups & optimizes without error message.

Re: Deleting photos from Library very slow.

Historically this has been a bigger problem on Windows than on the Mac, but have you emptied your trash/recycle bin lately? On Windows it seems that everything goes slowly when the bin is full, though I don't recall hearing of that on the Mac.

Re: Deleting photos from Library very slow.

Hmmmm.
How long should importing a catalog into a new one take? The catalog isn't *that* huge (about 11k images), and about 33'Mb.
LR is about 3'% into "Checking Photo Locations", and it appears to be stalling... Processor usage of about 3% No disk activity that I can see. Cancel just cancels, without any dialog.

Edit: Just doesn't seem to work.
Exporting the latest images to a catalog also does nothing (no dialog, no action).

I'm going to start a new catalog, import the latest batch of images again, and hope for the best.
Still, a solution would be nice. I do *not* fancy importing 11''' images again. :icon_frown:

Edit: In the new catalog, export as catalog works, so there's definitely something wonky in the old catalog...

Re: Deleting photos from Library very slow.

Rene, sounds like there must be some corruption in that previous catalog. Does it get to the second dialog, where you can choose which folders to import? If so, do a chunk at a time. If not, use Export As Catalog to export a chunk at a time, and then merge those into the new catalog. Should be quite quick - it's just data transfer if you've got 'include negatives' and 'include previews' turned off.

Re: Deleting photos from Library very slow.

Well. That would have been too easy....
Lightroom is "checking photo locations" when I try to import the old catalog into the new one. It keeps on doing that... (left it on overnight)

Exported as a catalog again, this time without 'include negatives' and 'include previews'.
Same thing.

Opening the exported catalog works fine.

Split into three parts.
First part got a bit further and it looks like it's actually importing that batch.
One strange thing however:

I'll try to find out which part of the old catalog is giving me trouble, but I can tell you this get's pretty frustrating...

Any fast way to switvh between catalogs beside quitting LR and double clicking the catalog you want to open?

Also, on a side note, why is the Identity plate not global, but linked to the catalog??

Re: Deleting photos from Library very slow.

Great....

RE: the identity plate tied to the catalog, I've never really understood that design choice. The only reasoning (speculation) I've ever encountered, was that one of the intended uses of the identity plate was to visibly distinguish between catalogs, to forestall confusion. That seems a bit specious given that the product is intended for the pro, who needs consistent and visible branding, and that the preferred mode of operation is the 'one catalog' system. I'd be interested if anyone has an alternative explanation.

Re: Deleting photos from Library very slow.

Well... I have a catalog branded to my name for most work and another branded for the company I do some jobs for. In the latter case, when I import, the copyright is different also. There still exist such cases when you have to have something like two Lightrooms but obviously, you have only one program installed on your machine.

Re: Deleting photos from Library very slow.

Not good.

Got the same crap again.
Imported a bunch of images, created 1:1 previews, meanwhile imported another bunch of images and created previews of those.

Went through the first batch, did "pick and reject". Then choose "Refine Photo's".

First indication something wasn't right: Rejected images still showed.
Okay, manually set the filter. Fine.

Then: Filter for rejected images.
Select all.
In folder pane: Add parent folder,
Move rejects out of the "selects" folder, into parent folder.

Now the "selects" folder showed as having 12 images, but none would show.

Cmd+Z a couple of times (until before the "add parent folder"), still none showed.
The rejects showed as empty previews at some point (not exactly sure).

Restart LR.
Now I have this:

Here's what I think is happening:

Cmd+Z backsteps, and also tries to backstep the "remove photo's" command, but cannot.
So I end up with a bad catalog...

Going to open the last backup catalog, check if that's okay, and see if I can replicate this.

Re: Deleting photos from Library very slow.

Getting stranger by the minute.

Opened backup (yesterday, this whole stuff has its advantages ;))

Images that were moved cannot be found. Sounds logical.

Add parent folder, Click the "?" icon, and "Locate photo" including "nearby photo's". So far, so good.

This is okay as well:

Here's the "Gotcha":

Whàt the F?

Maybe I'm missing something *very* basic here, but this seems rather buggy to me....

LR 2.4 on OSX 1'.4.11 on a G5 2x2GHz with 5.5Gb, LR catalog and images on secondary internal HDD.

Edit: Okay. That's it. I'm going crazy.

Quit LR. Start the same backup again. I'd forgotten that I'd obviously saved over it when quitting. :-[

Now I have this:

I guess I'll just keep working, and after a big import or selection restart LR...

Re: Deleting photos from Library very slow.

Maybe a mod can split this off to a new thread, because it seems my version of LR has other problems....

Another folder.
12' images by a 1D ("classic")

Open folder, hit caps lock, press P, X or right arrow.
After that I have this:

Then "Filter: Rejected only": Not good.

Filter: Pick and unflagged, select all, filter off, invert selection.

Bingo.

Now try Filter: Rejected: Again: Not good.

Cmd+Z:

Cmd+Z again undoes "invert selection". If I then invert selection again, I'm back where I started...

I'm filing a bug report.
