Rendering Previews after import...?

Hi All

I am wondering if there is a method of rendering previews after import? I have imported many images without rendering normal sized previews which means when I view them in LR, it is excruciatingly slow to show the images. Hence I am wondering if I can retrospectively render normal sized previews...?

You certainly can. Select the images you want to generate previews for, by folder can be an easy way or collection (in the library module) and then go into the library drop down menu to "previews" and there you can select standard or 1:1 previews to be rendered.

I use standard previews. Check out the settings in "catalog settings"> "file handling"

The previews ought to be larger than your screen pixel width, 1:1 are generated on the fly but take up a lot of space. My screen is 144' pixels wide and I use the 2'48 setting which gives good response with previews. i.e. LR is not rendering new ones each time I view an image.

Mine are the same width as my widest screen (168' pixels), and I also never see it re-rendering unless I zoom in. (I also render Standard previews on import.)

If you frequently work in Fill view rather than Fit, you might want to go wider than your widest screen, as Geoff suggests.

Thanks Mark, I think (sometimes!!) the suggestion of wider than the screen width came from those at Adobe.

Yes, the same person who once suggested 1.5x also suggested 1x. He said "same as your largest screen width, unless you frequently work in Fill view." (I'm paraphrasing.)

My real-world recommendation is to start with the same width as your widest screen, and see whether it needs to rerender for you often. If so, bump up one size, and try that for a while...

along these same lines...

I moved from an earlier version of LR to 2.' and following the suggestion of another user, I deleted the preview files and the thumbnail file associated with my catalog. Definite speed improvement in my situation.

Now that I am becoming a little more familiar with this, I appreciate this discussion because I had originally imported my images using MINIMAL.

However, now I am wondering: If AFTER import, the preview folders are deleted, how will they be re-built. IE, will the previews be rebuilt as MINIMAL or STANDARD or 1:1?

They'll be built as needed. If you're in Grid you'll get thumbnails; in Loupe it'll build Standard, or if you're zoomed in, it'll build the 1:1.

Or you can just select a bunch and tell it what to build in the Library/Previews menu.
