I am using a macbook pro and an older g5 desktop. I get the same speed issues with both machines, the mbp is quicker but...

When I switch from one image to another there is a 3-6 second delay before the image is done loading/rendering. This is the same after I optimize my catalog and I have the write xmp field un checked. Is this just how fast LR runs? Am I missing something? Is there anyway to speed this up?

Have you pre-rendered the image previews? That should help some.

Either on import, or select some images in Grid,

Library menu > Library > Previews > Render x Previews ; where x is a size. Render standard or 1:1 depending on whether you work in Fit or Zoomed views.

Thanks, giving that a try right now. That's a fairly lengthy process from what it seems. Time will tell if that is a time saver in the long run. Not something you want to sit and watch...

True, most folks try to do that during otherwise dead time...

If you need to get back to work, I believe you can interrupt it at any time by clicking the little X at right end of progress bar, with no harm done. It'll just stop where it is, you shouldn't lose any rendering already completed.

Thanks for the tip. MUCH quicker in library mode. Still a bit slow in the development area but overal, a very improved speed.
