Rendering Intent: Relative or Perceptual ?

I'm more than a little confused by Relative and Perceptual settings in the Print Module.

I understand that Perceptual is a 'better' option if there are a lot of out of gamut colours and this is where my confusion starts :?

LR2 uses Prophoto RGB as the colour space as its a wider colour space than Adobe RGB (1998, but am I correct in thinking that most (inkjet) printers cannot print that 'wide' ?

Based on this 'understanding' (which is more than likely incorrect ), I've set LR2 and CS3 to Adobe RGB (1998 as this is also the only ICM input profile (other than standard, which is sRGB) for my Canon printer and by and large, the output I'm getting from the printer pretty well matches what I'm seeing on screen (I calibrate my monitor with a Spyder2Express).

I've done a few test prints, selecting Relative and Perceptual, and the results I get with Perceptual really aren't consistent - sometimes the print is 'lighter' and sometimes the colours are more saturated compared to Relative.

This is where my confusion arises - I would have though that by using Adobe RGB (1998 as my colour space, the range of out of gamut colours would have been reduced and therefore Relative and Perceptual should almost be the same :?

Can anyone please enlighten me, or perhaps point out (gently) where my 'logic' has gone astray :cheesy:

I remember reading something from Jeff Schewe that if your printed images are lighter than you want, with a deep cast of reds/magenta, that you have double color managed your workflow. In other words where are you turning your color management on from.

Ia m sure you will work it out, it is just a matter of it clicking into place in the head!!

I found this a great tool for myself and used it to setup my workflow. I ended up using the Epson print driver to manage color prints implementing Perceptual intent. Black and White of course, was a different matter altogether and I run that straight through the Epson driver.
