It took just 6.5 minutes to render an image using my PC machine. (Acer Aspire TC-885/Win Home/i5-9400/12GB RAM/UHD Graphics 630 Display -- File size: 6240 x 4160.
On my Dell XPS - 9370 Laptop. (Win Home/i7-8550U/16GB RAM/Intel UHD Graphics 620 Display -- 5.5 minutes.

I read some comments in several YouTube reviews re: LR's Denoise being slow. But not that slow!

Anyone else having the same issue?

A rather tepid review by the author. He concludes that: "In short, it will be a welcome addition to those dedicated Adobe users, but the question remains whether it is necessary." Sniff...

I'm not an expert. Don't have a blog. No one from the now defunct DPReviews has ever solicited my feedback. I'm just a chump trying to take pretty pictures. That said, my impression is that Denoise is long overdue and it works. For me.

Attached are a before and after - enhanced view of a severely cropped portion of a shot taken last October in southern Utah.
Camera: Fuji XT-3 attached to an XF55-200mm ( zoomed out to @ 300mm)
File Size: 2158 x 3451
Info: 125 sec at f/14, ISO 1250
Hand held
[Settings in the Basic Tab are slightly vary slightly]

Hell yeah Denoise works. It's that 6.5 minutes to render the DNG that is killing me.

I find that Denoise does an amazing job. For my 20 MP images, it takes about half a minute. Unfortunately, you'll need to get a moderately powerful video card to bring the speed of the process to something you're comfortable with. The integrated GPU you're using isn't capable.

Noise is all about viewing. Some people view a very reduced image, often on social media, or at a goodly distance without cropping. Some pixel peep at more than 1:1 magnification, or even for consumption are heavy croppers and may view faces and such up close.

It just depends. Asking "is it necessary" is almost always the wrong question.

A 400/2.8 is standard kit for field sports. Occasionally someone will say "but is it necessary". It's almost the same as for denoise -- if you have to ask, you probably don't need it. The people that need it know they needed it.

Though it is always fair to ask whether the people who consume your images actually see the noise. On the other hand... you are one of those people.

Now speed... I am sorry to hear of your untimely death from waiting.

But in case you recover: making it faster is the same thing. How much do you need it to stop killing you.

The question remains is it necessary? Yes, very much so. I can push Texture, Sharpening and Detail much further than I ever could. Huge for wildlife details and many other categories. No more agonizing which 3rd party to go with every fall.

I understand the problem now. But it's complicated. My power supply is rated at 330 watts. The RTX 3060 Ti which I think would do the trick draws 200 watts. I dunno if I've got enough power left over to administer the rest of the processes.

I have sympathy with issues related to power. When building a new rig 18 months ago I was scared silly that I would have either electrical meltdown or a box with all fans in turbo mode and a machine too noisey to live with. Due to recent abysmal performance using Lr with a7rv files I felt the time was right, for me, to opt for a new GPU, did not want to take the risk of aiming too low, so opted for the 4070Ti. Even though I had a modern, new 850Watt Corsair PSU, my system would not boot with the new card installed. My worst nightmare. My problem was solved by buying a dedicated cable from Corsair to connect the power port on the GPU to the two ports on the PSU and avoided using the Y cable supplied by Gigabyte and the standard 6+2 cables supplied originally with my GPU.

So, all choices in this area are very uncomfortable and to more than a certain degree…. scary.

For me…. I had a camera I regard as the camera I have been waiting for since the first digital camera arrived, but it was excruciating trying to do basic edits on my raw files. I had to do something.

I also like this comment from above.
The people that need it know they needed it.
I see a lot more noise in my a7rv files when using higher ISO’s than I did with my a7r3. While using high ISO is not my normal mode.. I do have comfort knowing Denoise is now an option.

Power supplies aren't that expensive. A 650-watt power supply from Amazon could be had for $85-$160 Canadian dollars, considerably less if you're American. Doing the work to replace it in your box isn't difficult.

I appreciate the support and advice. There are perhaps a few advantages to living on this side of 49th parallel -- the exchange rate being one of the few.. Although up and coming 5 week camping/photography to Newfoundland may even negate that. :)

It seems possible then, to modify my vanilla wrap Acer TC-885 by replacing the power supply and adding something like a Zotac GAMING GeForce RTX 3060 Ti?

Be sure you have room to plug it in. Some consumer PC's are small form factors and some GPU's can be quite long (the same model can actually vary between brands).
