So far I've left the "render standard sized previews" unchecked to make importing quicker. But when I'm then looking at each image, it's annoying to always be waiting for "LOADING" or "WORKING". Is it possible to have LR render the standard sized previews after the fact i.e. after importing for all images in a folder? I realize that this might take a while but may be worth it? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi Kevin

Welcome to LR Forums. Would you mind filling in your signature please, as it helps us give specific advise. There's instructions here and here.

You certainly can render the previews after they've been imported. Just select them all in Grid mode, and go to Library menu > Previews > Render Standard Previews. It'll work away for ages, but it's much quicker when you view the images in future. When you import, I'd certainly tick that box, if I were you. They render a LOT quicker while importing than they do later.

Thanks Victoria. I've added my signature.
I went ahead and rendered standard-sized previews after the fact. But when I'm in Develop mode I am still having to wait while each image "loads". What am I missing?

Well done Kevin!

Ok, let's run through what happens...

In Library module, it just reads previews. So rendering previews will show the image quickly.

In Develop module, it goes through a few different stages.
1. It reads the preview (this bit gives an initial view, and is made quicker by rendering previews in advance.
2. It does a quick read of the original file, and then frees up the sliders.
3. It does a full read of the original file, and then the Loading disappears.

Make sense?

You can speed up steps 2 and 3 by having the files on nice fast drives, but that will never be instant. That said, freeing up the sliders to be able to get on and work is the important bit, and takes less than a second on my machine if I've previously rendered previews.

By the way, if you do this on large collections, I've found it useful to break it into a few manageable sections. LR on my Windows box crashed when trying to do it to 21922 photos at once.
