Renaming templates

I was creating some renaming templates for my files, and some of the functions are not so clear at first glance. Anyone could help me?

I attached the "sequence" box print screen.

When could I use "image # ''''", or "total # ''''"?

I've been using sequence, and I don't have a clue on those different versions.

Rene, I think

image = the file number applied in the camera (just the numeric part)
sequence = the order of import into LR (you can set the start #) pays no attention to file name/# (you would change the start # to preserve a sequence between multiple sequential imports/rename
total = the total # of images detected/selected for this import/rename

So, using these three, you could create a filename such as:

2''8'923 - shot 1324 - Billys Birthday - (''39 of ''153).cr2


The '''''' part, sets the number of leading digits/zeros, so numeric sort orders are correct.


Edit, Whoops, Rene, I just noticed that you said 'renaming' templates, I was thinking 'import' naming templates. I have to look into this

ReEdit - Yes, it works more or less as I described for renames, with total being the number of files selected for the rename operation. Note that setting a sequence start number other than '1', doesn't make much sense when using the total also.

This can be used at importing as well... Usually I create a template renaming, and at the import dialog I choose what I've done earlier.

But the "image" is not like the way you described... for this one there is "Original Filename Suffix" option, just above this box.

This is confusing, isn't it?

I just tried 'image', and it seemed to work that way, but I think my test images were named starting at ''1 anyway, so perhaps it was just coincidence. I couldn't find any other images on short notice, that I wanted to 'mess-up' the names.

Yes, I usually use the 'image number suffix' on my imports.
