Removing previous backup files

Okay, here's my dumb question for the day. I have selected to do a daily backup of the LR catalog. In my folder named "Lightroom Catalog Backup", I (naturally) have a long list of file folders named "2''9-'1-12 1'55; 2''9-'1-13-1331, etc.". Lightroom will not start until I free up at least 2'MB of room on this drive. Can these previous backup files be removed up to say a month before today's date? Or, do all of these previous daily backup files need to be retained?
Thanks for your help. BTW, I'm using LR 1.1 and I have tried repeatedly to upgrade to the latest version and just cannot seem to get it done. So, I am on LR 1.1 with this issue.

Dad, while you only really only need keep the latest one of those, most folks keep a handful of those backups. Say the most recent half dozen or so. (BTW, not a dumb question, this gets asked a lot.)

It pays to occasionally test a recent backup. The backup files are identical in every respect to a working catalog file, so you can just double click to open one, and give it a quick run thru or sanity check.

Caveat: one thing to watch for, if you have Lr set to open "Most recent..." then the test backup catalog becomes the most recent. This can lead to a real snafu, if you're not careful. Just make sure to reopen your main working catalog after testing the backup.

LR does not require you to retain any backups. They are for your convenience and protection. With regards to upgrading, have you tried to install 1.4? Can you be more specific about your problem? Perhaps somebody can then offer some assistance or advice.

Thanks for the replies!! Whenever I try to install ANY LR update, I always get a Microsoft Runtime error message window. I'll try again and obtain more specific information.

Are you first saving the downloaded file to your machine?
