Removed photos from catalogue instead of deleting

Hi all,

While making my preliminary pass of some photos I'd taken I marked a bunch of photos for rejection, and then went to delete them from lightroom (both from disk and from the lightroom catalogue).

However, by mistake I must have ended up only removing them from the catalogue and not deleting them. I have now noticed my mistake, a couple of months on. How can I rectify this? It will be a fairly lengthy process to manually work out which ones I should delete from outside lightroom (by comparing the file names in my catalogue with the file names in the folder). However, if I add them to my lightroom catalogue again I will probably have to go through and work out which ones I don't want to keep, all over again! Advise would be most welcome!

James, a quick solution for you - create a collection with ALL of your current photos, just as a backup plan (and of course, a catalog backup wouldn't be a bad idea.) Then import everything into the catalog. It'll skip the existing ones and just bring in the extras. All of the ones you'd previously deleted should be showing up in Previous Import collection, to make them easy to delete properly.

Noticed that it is an FAQ Victoria?

Make it an a Tip & Trick then! So simple! :)

Just add that the "Don't re-import suspected duplicates" is to be checked in the import dialog. ;)

I think a feature request would be nice so that you have the option to import or remove the files from disk when syncing a folder.

Nik, ouch! I can imagine a lot of accidental deletions... it never fails to amaze me how many people ok dialogs without reading them. I think my father's the worst at doing that though! I stuck a trick message on there on one occasion - "This computer will self-destruct if you press ok. Is that ok?" Would you like to guess what he pressed?
