Remove photos from Lightroom

I have Lightroom 2.3 version. If I remove photos from Lightroom (but do not delete from disk) where do the photos go to? We received a message that our "...hard drive which contains Lightroom catalog is low on space. Remove files or empty the trash to make at least 5' MB available soon." We only have 4''' pictures in Lightroom so how do we free up more space? Our hard drive does have plenty of free space.

Hi Stacey, welcome to the forum!

If you remove files from LR, you'd lose any settings, so you probably don't want to do that. You probably *do* want to move the files to a hard drive that has space though.

Can you tell us a bit more about your system setup? One drive or more? Operating system? Then we can point you in the right direction.

Lightroom — and many other programs — can chew up a lot of disk space. One "program" that I have that chews up a lot of space is "Kids downloading lots of stuff". More often, it is the data files (photos, music, videos) that actually chew up the space.

My point is that it may not be your photos that are taking up all the space and it may not be Lightroom that is the problem. Could be your music or videos, could be almost anything. There are two obvious solutions: 1) clean up your hard disk; 2) move some stuff (like photos) to another disk. The two are not mutually exclusive.

And emptying the trash/recycle bin is a good start. Depending on your configuration, that could be occupying a good bit of space.
