I've been using LR for years and updated recently & now i've got this mask (or is it an overlay?) that shows up over the shadow areas. It's a default setting that I want to go away. I mostly use LR just crank out photos & never do anything really fancy. Thanks

That's one of the clipping indicators (blue for clipped blacks, red for clipped whites). Pressing "J" will toggle them off.
