Red Eye Removal problem?

I have used lightroom since the 1.' release and have updated it each update. When I first used Lightroom the red eye removal tool worked great. Now it does not work at all. I select the red eye tool and click on the pupil and all I get is a beep. Nothing happens. Does anyone know what the problem is?

Drag around the pupil rather than clicking and it should automatically find the red area.

And if you don't like the red-eye area selected, you can resize or move the correction area, experiment a little with the cursor, there are different click and drag points. Sometimes I find the best result with what seems a grossly oversize correction area.

I am using an imac system X and lightroom 1.3.1.

I have also clicked on the red eye and dragged it out to the edge and that also gives me a beep and nothing.

I suspect this to be some kind of problem with the detection algorithm. I'm sure that rather than it working before and now not at all, you will find that it will work with some images and not others, or even some eyes but not others. Just a few minutes ago I was working on an image and I was able to correct the red in one eye but the other eye on the same person gave the beep, no matter how big or small I tried to drag the selection. The red in the problem eye looked a reddish-brown rather than a pure red, hence my suspicion of a detection problem of some sort.

One can use the clone tool to clone if there is some dark area that can be cloned from or one can turn up the colour/saturation/hue, fix the red eye and then de-adjust the colour back to what it was.

I appreciate the helpful suggestions.

I am working on Raw files so they are good quality pics.

The red eyes I am trying to correct are very red and large but do have the white of the flash in them that may be throwing off the software.

Denis, you may be right about the detection algorithm.

kiwigeoff, you may be correct in the idea of boosting red saturation to do removal and then bump it back down. That may be a good work around. I will try that tomorrow when I'm home.

Which is very annoying since I know it worked well at one time. I am getting tired of having to pull pictures into photoshop to remove the red eye. Not that it happens real often but I should be able to do it in Lightroom.

I remember when Lightroom's behavior changed relative to this function. I hated it at first because it worked wonderfully in version one and then, I wasn't able to make it work with the new method! :x

The solution for me was to take time, play much and experiment. Now I am comfortable with it. It just doesn't work very well on white rabbits tough! :mrgreen:

What data I've uncovered, and so far it's pretty sparse, is that the tool is designed to work specifically with human "red-eyes", and well-formed ones at that. As opposed to animal eyes, which tend to the green/yellow. Or those folks way at the back of a dark room with red-eyes that are optically larger than their actual eyes, like a zombie-movie.

I can't attest to changes in behavior between versions. My entire "pro" photographer mind-set arose from the single thought: "Darn*, I really hate red-eyes, I'm never taking another picture with red-eyes, ever, never, period (full-stop)". So, I rarely have to fix red-eyes.

*I didn't exactly say "Darn", but you know what I mean.
