Recommended Workflow to/from External Editors

There are several new tools in the marketplace that I often use to edit my photos. However, I always start by importing all of my images into the Lightroom catalog to maintain order to my photo library. Things seem to get a little messy for me as I go from Lightroom to external editor and back in terms of keeping track of edit history and photo versions. Original photo, Lightroom edited photo, external edited photo, external edited photo re-edited in Lightroom etc. etc. I'm sure many others are dealing with the same struggle. I'm curious what workflow processes/procedures others utilize to manage the chaos. Any help greatly appreciated.

I just export as a tiff with Lr adjstments, edit with the plugin and then just bring the edits back to Lr and keep in a stack. I do add a keyword to the new image.
