I have a new Epson r19'' on the way!!

I have done little if any printing, and any I have done has come out horrible so stepping up to a decent printer is a huge move for me.

I have Martin Evenings "The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book: The Complete Guide for Photographers" and a few other books, but I am hoping to make this learning curve as painless as possible.

Suggestions as to first steps? Recommended readings?

Thanks in advance!!

There are dozens of threads of printer 'gotchas' on this forum. I'd just have a search for 'Epson'. You could look for Canon printers, as well, but that'll get too many camera hits.

Printing problems, and the 'Lr ruined my JPG preview' are probably the two most frequently arising issues encountered in the LR learning curve.

I really like the Lightroom tutorial offered by Luminous Landscape. It covers Lightroom from top to bottom in massive detail, including a thorough discussion of printing. $39 seems like a lot, but to me worth it. I have dual monitors, so I put the program on one while I work along on Lightroom on the other. Most any Lightroom tutorial book should have a thorough chapter on printing. Also, if you are so inclined, iTunes (free download and you don't need to use it on an iPod) has several free Lightroom tutorial series which I find very useful. There are specific shows devoted to printing. Probably the most important advice I can give on the use of any printer is to calibrate your monitor and profile your printer. I use a Colormunki for this. Pricey at $4'', but you can easily redo printer profiles if you change paper or whatever. I find the free profiles offered by manufacturers to be of marginal use on my system. The goal of the calibration/profiling process is to match what you see on your monitor as closely as possible with what comes out of your printer. If you think about it, you will see that this is critically important. Once you get this done, the monitor automatically uses the new setting and you select your correct profile from a list in the print module. Very simple once you get the hang of it! I'm sure this is only marginally clear, so please do not hesitate to ask more questions. The value of this forum is the ease in which you can get help, some of which is actually useful!!!
