Transform to right or left (image rotation problems)

Hallo,
I'm working with LR for 2 years - now with 2.5
When I open files which have processed some time ago I notice that the entire development is still shown but transforming to right or left has gone. Is this standard or am I doing wrong ?

regards
wilfer

Hi Wilfer, welcome to the forum!

No, that's not normal. Can you tell us a bit more about what's happening?

Hi Victoria,

after importing photos first step in development is transforming them into the right position.

Once in a while I glance over my old photos and occasionally detect unsatisfacory colours. Going into development I see that the processing history is still available but the position is back to original.

Is it possible that the transforming step is not recognized by newer versions of LR??
It's not a big deal but I was just wondering

wilfer

Greetings Wilfer, can you put up a screen capture showing the panel, I'm not sure what you are meaning (Victoria seems to though!!)

What does the last step in the Develop history say - something like read from metadata? That's the only thing that I can think of, off the top of my head, that would reset the rotation and colours back to import state.

Hi Victoria,

I have noticed that a rotation is not at all shown in the development history -

To your questions: there is no "read from metadata" - the last step in development is in all cases a final adjustment of colours or contrast
What I have further detected now is pretty weird: when some previews adjust with development history and sharpening only then they rotate back to original position. And even worse: some rotate back few seconds later!
There is no system in that behavior:
- in some cases only part of a directory is effected - some directories completely - some not atall.
- effected are different raw files as well as tiffs and jpegs

Could that have to do with my video adapter NVIDIA GeForce 98'' GT ??

Thanks for trying to help

wilfer

That's really weird. You haven't restored a backup catalog recently, or anything like that?

Hi Victoria, Hi Brad,

to your questions:
- No I haven't restored a backup catalog
- depending on sources I have tiffs and / or jpegs - cr2 - crw - nef in my directories

what I have seen is that the catalog setting on previews is "delete 1:1 previews after 1 day" - could that be responsible for that weird behavior ?

by the way I am using LR 2.5 64 bit version on vista 64 OS

well this effect is a bit strange but I could live with it

so again thanks for you efforts
and best regards
wilfer

Hi everybody
sorry for coming in this thread with no contribution but I am having exactly the same problem Wilfer is dealing with. I am trying to understand if there is a setting responsible for this (very uncomfortable) behavior from LR.
My opinion is that there should be, given that LR is, among other very useful features, a software that is advertised by Adobe to "help photographers to organize their workflow".

Wilfer, no, that should just ditch any 1:1 previews. Do let us know if it happens again with any more recent ones.

Fabthi, no there's not a setting - it should retain that information correctly, and if it's not doing so, it's a bug that we'd love to investigate.

It may have been a bug in a much earlier version that's since been fixed, if you're both seeing it in pictures from ages ago rather than recent ones.

Hi Victoria
I had LR 2.' till early summer than upgraded to 2.4 and 2.5
I think, but I have to check this out, the pictures that are having this problem were originally imported with version 2.'
If this is the case, is there a way to solve this thing? I have lots of pics taken while working with LR 2.'..... :'(
Fabio
p.s. besides that, I am curios about LR 3 Beta. Is it a problem installing it while having 2.5 running on the same machine?

Anyone care to "translate" this problem as I am not sure what this is all about. By transform are were talking flipping ? You are saying that LR reverts back to the original orientation but still holds the other edits ?

Yes.
But please notice that, as Victoria pointed out, LR is supposed to "retain" also the photo orientation (Photo>Rotate Left-Right) that you apply to images and if it does not, that's probably because of a bug in the previous versions used to upload the troubled pictures, like it is supposed to be happening at my LR.

It may well have been a 2.' bug then. Hopefully it won't happen again. Quickest way of rotating the problem ones is to set the Painter tool to rotate and skim through them clicking on the ones that need rotating - it's easier than trying to aim for a small rotation button.

The LR3 beta - yes, you can install both alongside, however minimum specs are Intel processor and 1'.5.6 OS.

Hi Victoria
I do hope so but :
-I corrected just yesterday the image orientation of images of an old folder (imported originally with 2.')
-I opened this morning that same folder and.......again LR haven't retained the changes made to images orientation >:(

Sorry, I don't know what the Painter tool is and where it is located

Hmmmm, sounds like you could have some kind of catalog corruption there then. Try importing that folder into a clean catalog and rotating, and see what happens.

OK
I don't want to bother you asking how to do that procedure, can you address me to a resource that explain the steps?
mamy many thanks

Hi Victoria
The folder seems to work the right way in the new catalog; after I imported and rotated the images I closed LR and then soon re-opened and images are ok, all retaining the orientation I applied.
So this mean I have to migrate all my pictures to the new catalog, right? Otherwise I will find myself with pictures split on two different catalogs......hmmm, not very practical :icon_frown:.
Any other (better?) solution?
And, more important and to avoid future troubles, what is most likely responsible for the catalog file corruption?

Mod note: fixed important typo.

Hmmmm, ok, next thing then... In a new catalog, go to File > Import from Catalog and point to the original catalog. That'll bring up a dialog and you can just put a checkmark next to that same folder so that it imports the existing data into the new catalog. Often it'll import without any problems. Give it a shot, and if it works well, you can do the same with the rest of the original catalog, so it all ends up in the new catalog correctly.

Thanks Brad - do I dare ask what I mistyped?!? Fingers are working quicker than my brain at the mo!!! :D

It said 'few catalog' instead of 'new catalog'. If you look carefully, the fixed 'n' is highlighted, but I probably could have chosen a brighter color.

I imagine most readers could have made the new/few connection, but you never know, and trivial to fix....
(I guess 'important' typo was a bit strongly put. :) )

To be honest, being italian, I had to work quite a bit around that "few" which didn't mean that much to me :D :D
You know, I have to put all together software and translation and make the whole thing running smoothly!
Thanks to all of you
Fabio

LOL Thanks Brad. I was wondering what on earth I'd done, but yes, fairly important one that!

Fabio, well done!!
