A real Newbie

Hi ... new to LR and new to this forum... I really need a place to start... from the beginning to learn LR... read over all these threads and they all seem lilke "chinese" to me.... sorry not too tecky but I really can get along if I had a book, or step by step... don't need someone to help me, just need someone to guide me in the right direction to the info....

thanks so much

Caryl, Welcome to the forums.

We can help a lot more if you tell us about your computer, your cameras, your file workflow (raw, JPG?), Lr version? How do you want to use Lr? Are you a photo pro or a hobbyist, somewhere in-between?

Also, have a look at our Tips/Tricks forum, where you'll find a lot of helpful information, and numerous links to the kind of resources you're seeking.

Don't be bashful, a forum runs on questions.

I found Scott Kelby's book "The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Book for Digital Photogrpahers" to be the biggest help to me when I started with LR. In fact, I like all of his books. Try Amazon to look for used ones and save money. Good Luck!

Caryl, are you really using LR1? If not we can move this to general discussion where it will get more responses.
Welcome and ask away, there are no silly questions except those not asked!! ;) ;)

These video tutorials were the first thing I looked at yesterday:
http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/lightroom/articles/lir2am_videotutorials.html
And I'm glad I did.

Then I browsed through about half of the of the help (the interesting, easy half):
http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Lightroom/2.'/index.html

Then I came to this forum and read through some of the noob questions and solutions.

I did all this whilst hands-on 'playing' with the software; in my opinion you'll learn far more hands-on than simply reading. I'd say now I'm fairly comfortable with the basic features of the library, slideshow and print modules after a few hours use.

However, there is lots of advanced stuff that I envisage will take weeks of using the software to master. In other words, it's not just you - it can be an overwhelming experience. I suggest concentrating on the import and library features first, and try to get a feel for what kind of workflow and approach you're going to use with regard to collections and keywords. Also take time to learn a few of the keyboard shortcuts; they're very helpful.

Good luck.

Welcome to the forum!

I would like to plug-in( sorry for the pun) Martin Evening's The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book. Please use all aspects of teaching possible which include books, tutorials(as mentioned above), videos on YouTube(if you get bored, you can always change the subject!) and the most important thing- just play with the program. Be like a kid again and push/slide buttons and see what happens.
