I'm a newbie to this forum, but I've done a search for a query that's been eating me up for a while.

Basically I shoot RAW and import to LR2. Sometimes I'd want to change my image to a 1MB JPG. It may be a family snapshot that I want to keep a low-res version of, but not something I necessarily want to waste 1'MB of file storage on.

Is there an *easy* way to do this? I know that I can convert to JPG in the same folder, remove the image from the catalog, delete the RAW, then re-sync the folder, but this seems cumbersome. I could also shoot RAW + JPG and delete whichever rendition I don't want, but again, it means removing it from the catalog then re-syncing.

Ideally, I'd like to hit a button which says "Convert to JPG and discard the RAW file".

Any suggestions?

Hi stepbar,

Welcome to the forums!

I don't think you can get it down to one click with the current product but your should be able to do this easier than your current work flow.
1) Select the photo then right click or use the file menu to select the export option
2) Select a Files on Disk based export (e.g. similar to the For Email preset)
3) When exporting select "Export To:" "Same folder as original photo" and "Add to This Catalog"
4) Set other parameters as desired. You probably want to deselect the "Minimize Embedded Metadata" option.

If you are happy with the results of these steps, save a User Preset to make it easier on yourself next time you want to do this.

You will manually have to delete the old photos but this cuts out a few steps from your post.

Thanks,
Matt

PS For future reference, this type of question is really a "Lightroom General Discussion", not a "Tip or Trick".
