Raw images in time stamp order

I am a second-shooter/assistant at weddings.
I shoot raw, using a Canon 5D, and sometimes also with a 3'D. (I'm going to gravitate to using one camera and interchanging lenses in the future).
I take about 1,''' - 1,2'' shots.

I need to give the original raw files to the primary shooter in order by time.

• Put the shots from 3-4 Compact Flash cards into one file.
• Put order by time.
• Burn to DVD's

Can this be done in Lightroom?
Is Bridge an option.
I am working on a Macintosh.

Hi Lance, welcome to the forum!

If the camera times were sync'd, then you can just hand the files over and whatever software they're using should also be able to sort by time.

If the times were wrong, you can use LR to update the timestamps to filter them in together.

If you want to update the filenames to keep them in correct order in any software, make sure they are sorted correctly with the time stamps, and then rename them.

Bridge is an option too, but you might as well do it in LR.

I forgot to mention that I need to re-label the raw images with the bride's maiden name (yes the bride's) and put them in order by time. smith'''1
Otherwise, like you said, I could just hand over the raw files.
I need to import, but dont' want to change it to a dng or anything else.
On export do I choose "original" under "file settings"?

You won't need to export at all. Just make sure they're in the right sort order, and then use Library menu > Rename Photos to rename the original raw files (renaming copies thereof would obviously be sensible.....). Or, as you say, export as Original would do the same.

It worked like a charm! I'll try it on my "real wedding" files.

I have a question about duplicate file numbers on CF cards when using 2 cameras, which is a problem on importing to Lightroom. Lightroom warned me of the duplicate #'s.
I thought that I had reset one of the cameras, using the menu, to start the numbering at '''1, but found that it didn't really re-set. Maybe I just have to try it again. It was suggested that I take out the small battery from one of the cameras, then put it back in, which would re-set all my custom settings, but maybe start the CF card numbering at '''1.

Oh, I went to your web-site to see what kind of camera you use, and discovered that you have a book, Adobe Lightroom 2 - The Missing FAQ. It looks like it has lots of information that Scott Kelby's book doesn't have.

Yep, the book's a completely different style to Scott's. It's a compilation of the questions people have ACTUALLY been asking.

The numbering - I wouldn't worry about it. If you put the 5d files into a folder, and the 3'd files into another folder, then LR won't complain about the numbers. You can see both at once by clicking on the parent folder. ie. Wedding > 5d and Wedding > 3'd - when you click on Wedding, you'll see the contents of both folders. That way you won't need to worry about the camera numbering.

At this wedding, I only used the 5D.
When re-numbering, each folder begins at 1.
To avoid confusion later, I decided to keep the three folders, and put all the images in sequential order.
In library/rename photo I selected - 'custom name - sequence', which resulted in - young-1.CR2

3 CF cards - downloaded to 3 separate folders.
First folder '1 - 3'9
Next folder I started the numbering at 31' - 642
Next folder 643 - 761

It's a pleasant surprise to me that you can change the labeling on the original Raw file.

Note that in case you ever change your mind on the renaming, Lightroom always keep the original filename internally. From this, you can rename again as if you were importing.
