Yesterday I uploaded some raw files in my usual fashion into my hard drive folders with classic. I then attached them to a latest import collection, as i would normally, giving me the option to rate them on my ipad or phone. However when I opened the collection in lightroom cc on the iPad, they all have a “RAW” tag on the thumbnails, also on the phone version. I had assumed as per previous versions that only smart previews are uploaded to the cloud from classic, the documentation says so. Am i mistaken here, perhaps someone could help.

No change from previous versions, files uploaded from Classic are indeed still only smart previews. However, that file-type badge tells you the file-type of the original, no matter if only a smart preview has been uploaded (which might be important to know if planning to edit the picture in LRmobile). To see what's in the cloud (smart preview or original) you can tap on the cloud icon when in the Loupe, you'll see what you have in front of you and also what's up in the cloud.

Thanks Jim
I’ve been using it for years and I hadn’t noticed this before except when I’ve uploaded via the iPad, you’ve put my mind at rest

That "file-type" badge is just one of several different info overlays. In a collection's grid view, a two-finger tap will cycle through the various display options (as well as no info), so you might find an option that suits you better.

Thanks Jim, I forgot that, I think I had set it how I wanted and just left it that way. Richard
