RAW Edits in different Lightrooms

I have imported many photos (RAW) into Lightroom on my laptop. I have a wonderful system worked out and all my photos are backed up, but the edits are not. That is, in Lightroom, the changes I've made to the photos in the Develop mode don't stay with the RAW file if I were to open in in Lightroom at school. This got me thinking. If my laptop crashed or breaks, I have no way of recovering those changes. I searched the help files for a while and couldn't find anyting. Does anyone knowa way I can save those edits? An edit export of some sort?

Waht you are saying sounds like the Catalog Back Up set in catalog preferences.
The edits will be in the catalog and the backup and all you need to do is link the catalog with your files in the event of a failure somewhere.
You would be best to have a mirror backup of your image files as well.

Hmmm ...

Ok, I haven't done anyting with the catalog yet. I exported the Lightroom Catalog as a Catalog and saved it on my external hard drive. If I connect that hard drive to a school computer with Lightroom, will it open with my edits? Do I have to import all the photos again, then open the Catalog?

Ok, I have all my image files on a second external hard drive. I'm shooting for a complete double-backup system so if one external drive and/or my laptop goes down, I will be able to start it up eventually again without losing anything. Like I said, I've never used catalogs before so I have a few quick Q's.

1. Does the backup prompt when Lightroom starts update the catalog if new photos have been added and edited, or do I have to re-export the catalog in order to include new photos?

2. What does "test the integrity of this catalog" mean?

3. Is there a setting in the catalog setting I need to make SURE is checked or unchecked to keep the edits when I export it?

Thanks a BUNCH for your reply. This is exactly what I was looking for. I knew it was in there somewhere, I just couldn't quite put my finger on it.

LR will create a new catalog each back up so will be up to date with files at the time of the back up.

LR is checking the database for errors and correcting if possible, I have not had any errors with this.

I use the "Autowrite to XMP" which keeps the changes up to date in the files as well as the LR catalog. This is found in Catalog Settings/Metadata.
