Rank beginner in desp need of help starting!..

Well the embarassing moment is finally here....

I've had LR 1.2 for 2 years now and have struggled with getting it to do basic things. I've been in the software industry (marketing) for 2'+ years and know my way around almost every ap but am having a helluva time with this program.

Is there anyone out there that can take pity on this (embarassed) and totally lost soul?

3' minutes on the phone might get me to actually be able to use this tool and find my way through my existing and future images.

I have the LR "bible" and still cant get'er going right.

I even checked a lot of the threads here but unfortunately, I need more help than extensive definitions on what it does and how it does them.
My biggest concern: how to open and catalog my existing images and then to delete ones that I want to throw out for good.

Went to open it today and got this error: "Lightroom must quit because catalog named xxxx.lrcat is ot writeable and cannot be opened" (I'm so screwed, lol)

Please help!

Welcome to Lightroom Forums Gary!

First, go in the help menu and look for updates to freely upgrade to version 1.4.1.

Did you have any images in a catalog previously?

And for a good start, see The Starter Kit

You have told us that you are trying to use Lightroom but can't figure it out. A few more details from you would help, like exactly what are you trying to do that you can't do.

Most of us here (all of us?) use Lightroom to catalog and edit our photos, some use it to print, create slideshows and web galleries. We can provide support, although I believe most people's preferred method of providing support is not via phone.

Do take Denis's suggestion and read the Lightroom Starter Kit.

I'm knee deep in work at the moment, but I could catch up with you on Skype in a few weeks time if it helps.

For now, that error message is saying that it doesn't have write access to the catalog - generally a permissions issue. If you haven't done much so far, you might find it easier to hold down Ctrl while starting LR and let it start a new catalog for you, and start with a nice clean slate.
