Question about saving metadata to files

I do not use the auto saving function. How can you save the metadata to just the files that need updating without checking each thumbnail's icon?
If I select all files in the catalog and cmd-S, it seems to be saving to all the files again. I just want to be able to target the files that have changed.

It only writes to the files that have changed.

I tried it several ways and this seems to work:
Save Metadata to file (Cmd/Ctrl+S) tends to save metadata back to all selected images. However, the Save Metadata command found under the folder context menu saves metadata only to those files that have changed. With this second method you don't need to select the files, only the folder that contains them.
