Problems with sort function in Library

I'm fairly new to Lightroom 1.3, but am having a problem with the sorting function in Library. For some of my imports, I have available the "user order" choice under the sort function on the toolbar. For other imports, this choice is not available, limiting me to use "caputre time", "import order", "rating", etc. and the "user order" option is not listed as a choice. Without the "user order" choice, I can't change the order of the images. What am I doing wrong ? Windows XP based.

User order only works at the lowest level of a folder hieracrchy. If the grouping you're looking at, folder/collection, has subfolders, user order is not enabled.

You can, to a certain extent, work around this by de-selecting "Include photos from Subitems" on the Library pulldown in Library module. But that may not be what you want. You may have to create a new collection specifically to enable user sorting on the photos you want. For example, to create a web gallery or slide show in a specific order.

This is a very FAQ, and another one along the same lines, is "I can't drag my images where I want them..." The gotcha' on that one is you must click on the actual image, and not its grey border, in order to drag.

On a side topic, because we all come from so many backgrounds, and have different computing and photography equipment, many of the members here create a signature block, with pertinent techinical (and personal) data to give a little background to questions and problems. You can access that on the task bar above, upper left, User CP.
