Problem with Update DNG Preview & Metadata

Hey Everyone,

Im on a Mac and I am using Lightroom 1.4.1. I am looking for the best way to save my Lightroom edits to my DNG files before I save them to disc, or on a different hard drive used for storage. I thought that selecting all the photos and clicking "update dng preview and metadata" would save all my develop changes to the file...

Here is my problem. Once I go back to the source folder of DNG files, only some have the updated preview and changes, others do not! When I go to the DNG files in Lightroom that didn't save the changes, I do each one manually "update DNG preview and metadata" and it works fine!!! So this means when I select all and click update dng preview and metadata, not all the files are being updated.... any ideas??!!?

Is this the best way to keep my develop settings in case I need to go back to the DNG files in the future for re orders, etc.?

xmacvicar, Welcome to LR Forums.

First question I guess is , are you selecting all the files to be updated in Grid mode in the Library, or in the filmstrip with the grid not displayed or in one of the other modules?

I don't know if this is applicable or not, but there are a number of instances when operating on a multi-image selection in the filmstrip, only affects the 'most-selected' image. To be honest, I don't know whether this is one of those operations or not. (Doesn't seem like it should be, but ....) . Whenever I have doubts about which images an operation like this applies to, I just execute it in grid view.

I expect someone who knows for sure will be by shortly ....

As an aside....if this function worked correctly; I select all the photos and update dng preview and metadata, technically, I could burn those DNG to a disc and in 2 years time, import them into lightroom and my develop changes will still be there? Is that correct?

Or would the easier thing be to just export the files as a catalog, now that 1.1 and on has that feature? Just export them all as a catalog, burn that disc, then know for sure when I import the catalog, all the changes will be there

Yes, that's the intent. The other choice would be to save the original raw file (CR2, NEF, etc.) with an XMP sidecar file which would store the adjustment data. There are widely varying opinions as to which way is better, all of which pretty much boil down to:

a) who do you trust to maintain backward compatiblity more, the camera mfg's, or Adobe?
b) would you rather deal with one file per image, or two linked files per image?

That would also work. Although, again you're relying on Adobe to maintain even more backward compatiblity on catalog import. I don't work this way, so I don't have a real opinion on the pros/cons of this method.
