Problem with folder location in catalog

So, I have my directory structure like this:

root folder->year->date->pictures

for example inside the root of where is keep my pictures I have root->2''9->2''9-'4-'3->2''9-'4-'3-3897.cr2

A little redundant perhaps but it works.

In the lightroom catalog I have the years at the top so in the catalog it looks like this:
2''9->2''9-'4-'3->2''9-'4-'3-3897.cr2

OK, now the actual problem.

When I edit pictures in Photoshop they get reimported into the same place on the disk but a different point in the catalog. They are reimported with the folder at the root of the catalog like this:
2''9-'4-'3->2''9-'4-'3-3897.tif

At first I thought I could just drag them to where they belong but I cannot because I get an error saying the file is already there. (Technically it IS already there on the disk)

So I have two questions.

1. Is there any way to stop this from happening when I save files out of Photoshop.
2. What is the easiest way to merge the folders that have already been created?

It seems this is happening to a few Evan. At the moment I don't have an answer even as to whether it is a PC only thing or not.
First I'd try synchronising the original folder and optimising the catalog.

Right click on the 2''9-'4-'3 folder and choose Add Parent Folder. Hopefully will do the trick.

We had another thread like this recently, and it came down to different relative paths which were fix by a forced update. The solution on that occasion was quite simple - move the files to another location (or rename the parent folder or drive letter) to make them all missing, relink them with the new name, and then, if you want to go back to the old naming/drive letter, repeat to switch back. If you back up your catalog first, there should be no risk in trying it - shout if you need more instructions.

Thanks, I will try that next time it happens. It seems to happen about 25-35% of the time when I use Photoshop so it shouldn't take long.

On a side note, I did notice some other interesting behavior. If I tried to synchronize the folder it basically did nothing. It recognized that they were missing but then it did not add them again because it also recognized they were already in the catalog.

Here is where it gets interesting. If I removed one of the files from the wrong spot in the catalog, when I resynchronize the part of the catalog where they belong it removed all the files from that folder and re-imported them. That was certainly not the behavior I was expecting. In the end, I did not lose anything except my flags but it is still strange behavior.

Evan, could I suggest you report your experiences - particularly your last paragraph - using the Official Feature Request/Bug Report Form. That does sound like a potentially horrible bug, and the more information they get, the more likely they are to track it down.

argh, I'm having this same problem too - except I'm on a mac.

I keep all of my photos stored on my NAS, and its mounted via AFP to my computer. This is totally frustrating, I can't get any work done! I am wondering if this is a network share issue. I'm going to try to copy my files locally and repoint lightroom to the new location.

I'm using LR 2.3, PS CS4, and ACR 5.3. I'll report back if I make any progress - if anyone has a decent workaround, I'd be happy to hear it!

ummm, I just replied to this post, but for some reason it never showed up.

Anyways, I'm having this exact same problem, but on my mac. I stored my photos on my NAS and connect to it via AFP. I suspected this may be part of the problem, so I copied my folder locally and I'm not experiencing this issue anymore.

I hope this helps anyone coming across this problem. Its quite annoying...

p.s. - I'm using LR 2.3, PS CS4, ACR 5.3

Hmm...I did not see your post originally either.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I already have my files on a local drive. I have a job that copies changed files from my local drive up to a server nightly just so I have a backup.
