Hi,

I can't import raw photos when they are over the network. But they can be imported if I copy them over to the local drive. The weird thing is that I can import jpegs from the network.
[li]Brand new catalog > Import > Select 1 single DNG or CR2 photo on the Z drive. The CPU stays busy for over 35 minutes before I killed it.[/li]
[li]Same new catalog > Import > Select 1 single JPG photo on the Z drive. No problem.
[/li]
My hard drive crashed so I reinstalled everything from scratch. I didn't have the problem before the reinstall. Windows XP-64bit. 2 CPU 3gb RAM, LR 2.7-32bit [no 64bit for XP]. Local disk free space 5'Gb.

I've searched around and have not found any other mention. Very likely that I'm doing something wrong. Any suggestion of where to start?

Thanks

Hi,

The first thing I would be trying is a simple copy from Z to local drive using Explorer....just trying to see if the problem is within the LR import routine, or elsewhere in your system....

Works properly when the I copy either the DNGs or CR2s to the local C drive. The JPG works properly either locally or over the network.

Baffling! Especially the fact that you can import a jpeg but not a raw.

What import option are you using (Copy, Add, Move, Copy as DNG)?
Presumably the import process has no trouble 'seeing' the files on the network drive, it's just hangs up when you've made the selection and pressed the final Import button?
What Import options are you using (e.g. develop presets, metadata presets, keywords), and what size Previews are you asking LR to render on the import?

It doesn't get that far on the raw:
[li]I click on the import button[/li]
[li]Lightroom opens the small file selection windows.[/li]
[li]I select 1 photo, click on Choose[/li]
[li]and That's it. NOTHING.[/li]
With JPEG on the network or raw locally, It goes on to the copy/move blah blah

Sorry, I can't even begin to think what could be causing that. Any of the Gurus out there encountered anything similar?

A couple more questions (clutching at straws):

1. Presumably when you say you recently did a re-install, I assume you meant the OS followed by your apps? If so, how clean was the OS part, i.e. any unexpected issues along the way.
2. Before the re-install, what version of LR were you running, 2.7 or earlier?
3. Any other issues (non-Lightroom) on the PC since the re-install?

All I can think is that there is an issue between 32-bit LR2.7 and 64-bit XP.....but if that's the same setup you had before the hard drive crash then I'm left scratching my head or maybe thinking that something went wrong on the re-install of either the OS or Lightroom. In which case redoing at least part of the re-install may be necessary.

Other than cost, was there any particular reason why you opted not to upgrade to Win7?

Replaced the hard drive, installed from the CD. Installed Windows, then the rest and LR 2.6.1 which I then upgraded last week to 2.7

I was running 2.' to 2.6 without any problem, it worked

Zero, nada, zilch.

That's what I think, but right now I'm grasping at straws on how to make it works.

Yes, I haven't had the time. Hopefully at the end of the month. But installing windows 7 is a between 2 and 3 days worth of work. Then a couple of weeks for the various configurations of all the various software...

Is this *any* raw file, or just a select few?
I'm not sure I understand:
[li]If you mean a few files: It happens with any number of photos. 1 or many, same thing.
[/li]
[li]If you mean the file type: It happens with DNGs, CR2s and PEFs. But no problem with the jpegs. They work if the image is on the server or or the local drive.
[/li]
I mean, if you take a raw file that you've successfully imported before, can you import it now from your network drive? (You'd need to remove it from the catalog first, or try importing into a different catalog.)

I'm wondering whether it's possible that there's something in those raw files that's tripping LR up, and that it's not actually because they're on the network drive. (And I'm barking up that tree because I can't fathom a reason why the file type should make a difference.)

I'm thinking that decompressed RAW files might have been in someway corrupted and LR does not recognise the file with the CR2/DNG/PEF extension as a valid RAW file. Also can you D/L the latest EXE of ACR and open one of the RAW files from the network drive with that? http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=1'6&platform=Windows

I commonly use a NAS and have without incident imported RAW files into LR from it.

Good point, I haven't thought about that. I will try it later tonight.

Backup is the wrong word. It was a straight copy to an esata external drive.

What baffles me is why the problem is only when Lightroom import the images from the server. What I'm currently doing:
1. Copy the images to a USB drive.
2. Import the images from the USB drive.
3. Move them to the server during the import.
Then Lightroom has no problem reading them. But:
1. Copy the images to the server.
2. Import the images from the server.
3. Nothing happens.
I have checked the server, no problem, I have also checked the networking, no problem. All the data for all the applications are on the server. Even the catalog gets copied to the server.

How can I try the ACR by itself? I haven't installed Photoshop and my copy is quite old CS3.

Thanks

When you are copying the files to the local USB drive, where are you copying from, and what are you using to do the copy?

When you are copying the files to the network drive, where are you copying from, and what are you using to do the copy?

Can you do a bit-by-bit file comparison between the file you are able to import from the local USB drive and the file you are unable to import from the network drive to ensure that they're identical?

Yes they are. I just copied the files from the server to a an external hp usb drive on my computer. Then imported them from the USB drive in Lightroom where it works.

BTW, since MSDOS 5, the copy and xcopy are always validated by a checksum with only 1 read of the source. When using -v, copy and xcopy will do a reread of the source file at the end of the copying to ensure that the checksums are identical.

It took me a few days. But I've installed windows 7-64 bit, 3gb ram, core2duo cpu. A clean, brand new install. Just installed LR2.7 and now I get again the same problem. I can't import the raw photos if they are on the network drive.

Any suggestion on how to track the problem?

Thanks
This sounds like a permissions problem on the NAS. You have a new machine with a new user even though they might have the same names as the old. You may need to log into the NAS and set permissions for this new machine/user.

If it is not a permissions problem on the NAS, It may be a UAC issue. Check in Windows Explorer to see if you can copy a raw file from the NAS to a local drive.

[li]I have check everything and I have no problem with the server permissions, that I know of.[/li]
[li]I copied, without any problem, a dozen of the photos that I can't import.[/li]
[li]I have disabled the UAC and it's the same thing. BTW, isn't UAC just a notification?
UAC is User Access Control. It determines which user has permissions to do what in the file system. At least one user must be in the Administrator Group. The "Nag Screens' were added with the release of Vista to make sure the non technical user was aware when a program was started that might potentially damage the file system or introduce malware. It should not be disabled if your computer has access to the internet.
