Printing with template issue

Hello,

I use LR to print at events using a template often including logos. I create my templates in PS4 as a PSD file and then save it as a PNG file for use in LR. Recently, I had a logo that just would not print correctly. It was pixellated and unclear. In PS at 1''% the logo looked fine. I ended up printing from PS and the logo printed perfectly. I could not get a good/clear print from LR and had to complete the job using PS to print from. Any idea what is going on here? any suggestions to correct this problem? This is not the first time its happened but usually it is not a problem. I always end up loading the template into LR at least twice in order for it to appear and print clear.

OK. Lots of help from the LR forum I see.

I have LR installed on a Mac running OS 1'.5.6 and on a win XP machine. I created a template and tried printing to the same printer from both machines and printing to the XP machine produced perfect results. The MAC is still printing jagged.

Any suggestions out there?

Keith, sorry for the non-response. I wasn't completely sure what you're talking about, so waited for someone else to jump in. Of course then the thread is marked as 'read', so out of sight, out of mind.

Are you using the technique of setting a TPI (Transparent PNG Image) as the Identity Plate?
Some of the times it's working, and in this one instance, it doesn't?

What size file is the id plate image? In pixel dimensions?

Hey Brad + Victoria,

Sorry I had given up and just went back to printing on my PC but would love to solve this issue.

Brad - I am using a PNG image. It happens all the time.

Victoria - It doesn't seem to matter what size image I use. The sample I posted was from an 818 kb file. The more important factor(in my eyes) is that this file printed perfectly on my PC but jagged on my Mac. I've tried printing from LR2 + LR3 on my Mac with the same result.

Any ideas?

I'm PC, so I'll leave it for the Mac folks to comment on.

How large is the template PNG? Bytes and pixels? Is there somewhere you can post it so we can play with it?

I seem to remember Scott Kelby having a tutorial where the DPI setting was the issue. I will look through my archives and see what I can find. Try the same graphic at 72 DPI and 3'' DPI and see what happens. If I can find the old video, I will post a link.

The Print module has a problem with printing at very low PPI settings. Might that be what's happening here?

(It's more often a problem when printing to a file rather than to a printer, since you generally don't use low PPI settings with a printer.)

Hey Mark,

The file is 1848 x 1248 @ 3'' dpi. How much larger should it be? It doesn't matter whether I print to file or print to paper. On my MacBook it comes out pixelated and on my PC it doesn't.

OK. Checked that and tried printing to file at 72, 3'' and 6'' ppi all with the same results.
The template - actually the fonts in the template never look sharp when viewing in LR.

I just tested this on Mac with a print to JPEG and the overlay PNG file has the same pixilation as the underlying graphic. That tells me it is rendering as well as the image on which it overlays. At correct size, it prints properly too. Comparing the Bare PNG with the Print to JPEG side by side, they are equivalent.
