printing bug?

I was getting purplish stripes at one end of photos I was printing with my old printer and tried all the usual cleaning things to no avail. I was just given a new printer and I'm still having the same problem--I think it must be the software program. It doesn't happen on every photo I print but it happens on all dark photos. What should I do? I'd really appreciate some advice. Thanks.

Can you give us a bit more information? Which printers have you tried? How close are you to the edge of the paper when the lines appear? What happens if you try printing through other software?

Is your system color managed? May be either a lack of color management or duplicate/conflicting/wrong management.

Hi, Victoria. Thanks for the welcome. This is my first experience with a forum & it's great being able to ask questions. I tried some detective work this morning & I'm as confused as ever. To answer your questions first--the stripes (sometimes just a band) appear at the end to come out of the printer last & they are about 3/4" wide & never show up on white background. I used to have a Canon iP4''' and now have a Canon i99''. In trying to track down the problem it's difficult beaause it's intermittent. It doesn't always happen even on the same picture printed with the same settings. It doesn't matter whether the paper is matte or glossy. I tried printing from iphoto and several pictures did not have stripes. Then one did & I don't know if it was imported from Lightroom originally or not. I printed a photo last night which hadstripes on the dark background at the end--the usual thing. After receiving your note I printed the same picture from iphoto & didn't get stripes, but then printed again fromLightroom and didn't get stripes either. So I'm really at a loss. It can't be the camera because it happens with photos taken from different cameras. Any ideas?

When I've seen this before, so close to the edge of the paper, it's always been due to the printer having trouble holding onto the paper. You could try printing the image on a larger sheet of paper so that the image doesn't go as close to the edge - that should determine whether it's a software problem, or more likely a paper feed problem.

Hi, Ian. Thanks for getting involved. I'm stumped. I assume you'll see what I wrote to Victoria this morning, but I'm not sure if I'm replying to you in the right place...The color matching says BJ standard. I remember my photography class saying color correction should be "off" & I set up the color matching to "none" thinking that was equivalent to "off" but it seems to have changed to BJ standard on its own. Is that possible? What am I doing wrong? I'm new to Lightroom & don't know Photoshop yet, so it's all a bit confusing. I'd really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

The more I read your explanations, the more I don't think this is a color management issue. Are you printing borderless images? I think Victoria may be on to something with a paper handling issue of the printer(s).

I'll try that. I'm using a ton of ink trying to figure out what's happening. But it seems strange that my old printer started doing it out of the blue after more than a year of no problems and that this new printer (not unused--my brother gave it to me) does the same thing only intermittently. Do Canon printers normally have problems with 5x7 photos? Thanks. Sheila

Hi, Ian. No, I have borders on them all. Is it supposed to be BJ standard? And is it possible that the program changed what I saved as a preset? My preset names are 5x7 (or 4x6) glossy (or matte) no color correction. Weird.

I rarely print to inkjet any more, but I used to have a collection of Epson's that would sometimes do the same when it got close to the edge. Most of the manuals state 'print quality may decline in the last X amount'. Gently helping the paper through sometimes helps. It does get worse as they get older - the little teeth don't seem to hold so well.

What do you mean "BJ Standard?" You mentioned iPhoto, so I will assume you are on a Mac. Are you on 1'.5 or 1'.4? If 1'.4, have you downloaded the latest printer driver from Canon?
