Can I instruct the printer through LR Classic CC to print a panorama photo onto 3 sheets, left, middle and right? I know work-arounds by creating virtual copies and cropping them, but how about just through the printer?

Short answer: no.
The printer doesn't know anything about where to "cut" the original file, spacing, borders, etc.
You need to create 3 images (virtual copies if you wish) and print them separately.

Try this in the Print module:
  1. Set up a print on the paper size that you have, but don’t worry about the fact that the panorama is small on the page.
  2. Enable Zoom to Fill. This makes the image fill the entire height of the print cell. Now the ends of the panorama are not visible. But they’re still there, so…
  3. Position the pointer inside the image area and drag to the right until you see only the left end of the panorama.
  4. Adjust print cell size and margins as needed.
  5. Print.
  6. Position the pointer inside the image area and drag to the left until the next segment of the panorama is in view, leaving a little overlap with the previous segment.
  7. Print.
  8. Repeat the previous two steps until the entire panorama is printed.
