Print to JPEG - Colour Management Problem

Hi Guys,

Regular lurker on the forums, but I have an issue I hope you help me with?

In LR 2.' when I use the new Print to JPEG function, it produces a JPEG where the colours have a slightly blue cast - Not nice. So I thought, ok, I will try and just use the Export function in the Library module to Burn a full sized JPEG from the same image just to compare them - this produces a JPEG file which is excellent and what I would expect to see.

So what am I doing wrong? I know I will lose some colour information from changing a ProPhotoRGB image to an RGB JPEG - but then why are the two images different when they are both 8-bit RGB JPEG's produced from the same file? Clearly some sort of colour management issue. Does the exported JPEG have the colour profile attached, whereas the Print to JPEG file does not?

The settings I am using on Export to JPEG are:
24'ppi, Print Shapening Standard, Glossy, Quality 1'', Profile sRGB, Perceptual.

The settings I am using to Burn Full Size JPEG are:
JPEG, Quality 1'', sRGB.

I have viewed the 2 different JPEG files in PS CS3, back into LR, and in Windows Photo Gallery with the same results.

I have tried different RAW images in LR and get the same problem.

Hoping for a simple answer to probable user error!

Are you using the beta or final version?

Have you tried relative rather than perceptual?

I am using the Final version of LR 2.'. I have tried both perceptual and relative. I have just tried relative again and confirmed the same problem.

I have attached a medium quality small crop of two different JPEGs to hopefully illustrate the problem between the images.

First file shows the output JPEG using Print to JPEG in the Print Module, and the second file shows the Burnt JPEG using the Export method in the Library Module.

(The second one looks a bit oversatured in my non colour managed web browser, so probably best opened in Photoshop).

Rob, I know this won't help, but I just went thru the steps you detailed, with one of my images, and I see absolutely no difference between the export/print to file results. I checked with PS, XnView, IE7, Opera9.5, Safari 3.something for Win. The only difference is the print to file was printed to a 4x6 at 3'' dpi, so it has a smaller pixel count. A teeny bit of pixelation is seen in that file, and the histogram is a little shorter, while maintaining the same shape.

When I get a sec, I'll d/l your samples and pixel peep.

turn Profile to &#822';Managed by Printer” in the Printer panel, then switch back to JPEG and print (Draft Mode: OFF) and see what you get

I have tried this and it makes no difference, however, I think I may have found the problem:-

In the Print Module, with Print to JPEG file selected, and in the Colour Management Profile box, I changed the default "sRGB" setting to "other" and then selected the profile "sRGB IEC61966-2.1". I then printed to JPEG file, and the output JPEG is perfect and now appears identical to the output JPEG when exporting from the Library module!

So I am thinking maybe the default sRGB profile being used in LR Print to File module is corrupted?

I think problem solved for me, but any thoughts on this?

you could be right about the profile being corrupt but I can't say for certain.
