Hi,

I have installed Win 7 64 bit on my system and I have seen that the creation of the previews in the grid view is SLOW.

It seems that the 64bit version is re-creating the previews, even if all the data is already on the disk. I have my catalog and Co. on a second disk, not affected by the OS change but the litte ... are displayed and is seems to me that it takes longer for LR 64bit to apply the development settings as it took for the 32 bit on Windows XP.

Also I do not understand why this work is done again as all data is already there.

Not sure if this is a bug and requires a bugreport. But any directory I touch LR is re-creating the previews with ... and this slows down all work.

Any Idea or explanation ?

No harm in reporting it either way.

Sounds a bit odd - is the previews file definitely safely on the second drive?

Hi Victoria,

Yes all is on a second drive (Physically).
It seems to me that the 64 bit LR does not like the files created by the 32bit LR.

I also tried it with a new drive, 99 GB/s, and copied ALL back from the backup drive.
This will ensure that all files are owned by me on the new system and we do not have a ownership problem. But is is still the same. Any folder I touch gets the ... in the uper right corner like it does on an import when no previews are available.

Also it feels that the creation of the preview is slower on Win7 64bit than it was on XP 32bit.

Is there a way to force a 32 bit installation of LR on a 64 bit OS ?
I may try this in a VM, if possible see if this is only feeling or reality.

Yes, you can, you just go to the same installer, click the 'show the files' button and double click the setup32.exe instead of the setup64.exe.

Before you do that, why not go to Grid view, select all of the files and go to Library menu > Previews > Render Standard Previews and go off and leave it overnight. It should have sorted itself out by morning. It's probably running slowly at the moment because it's running background tasks rendering the previews etc.

Thanks, I try that later with some picutes.

One questions about the camera raw cache.
Due to the install the cache dir was empty, as by default it was on C:\.
I have now moved it also to my fast disk for pictues and it fills up with files while I use the grid view only.

I assume some data is taken ouf of the .lrdta directory but the raw cache is also involved in the dispay of the previews.

Is there a documentation/description for the raw cache and its function ?

The camera raw cache holds cached raw data for the most recently used photos. It fills up whenever LR has to read the raw data - either while rendering previews in Library or when moving from photo to photo in Develop module. It makes it quicker when you go back to any cached photo - particularly in Develop module.
