Pretty vs. bad previews

This has to do with presenting images on a laptop disconnected from drives that contain original files. Sometimes the previews are excellent, sometimes they appear to stem from very small files.

An image that entered LR yesterday and looked fine also when mac disconnected from disk, that same image is bad today - and files that looked bad yesterday, they are fine and dandy today.

Settings: File Handling/1024 px/Preview Quality: Medium/ Automatically Discard 1:1 Previews: After 30 days.

Any idea how to secure pretty previews?

How wide is your monitor? I'm going to guess it's more than 1024 pixels, and what's happening is that LR is showing you those 1024-pixel standard previews.

You should set your standard previews to be at least as wide as your widest monitor.

It's a 1440 px mac powerbook, and those images that look pixelated do so also when small.

Bent, have you tried to re-render the standard preview for one of the affected images (though perhaps increase the preview size to 1440 first)? What type of preview do you render on import?
