Preferences not holding and "Writing xmp failed"

I am having some bizarre issues since upgrading to 2.4 and switching to vista.

Preferences do not seem to hold.

1. Auto write to xmp does not hold. Went to preferences today to see the box unchecked when it should have been. Thinking then that my images had not had the changes saved i selected all images in the folder and save to xmp. the result - ' "Writing xmp failed" All 47' images failed. ' This is a worry

2. Show import dialogue when memory card detected - we all know the result to this one.

Could it be folder / file permissions issues since the upgrade to Vista ?

yep i think so.

am having similar write issues when trying to back up drives with beyond compare. am learning to hate vista evry quick....if microsoft wanna know why mac is eating a chunk of its apple!! this is why. very frustrating OS. bring on 7.
