Pre-sets upon import

I must be super, super dim witted but here goes. I would like to alter the changes made by LR upon importation, I realise I can do this via the pre-sets but I could swear there was a way to have them automate on import.

I thought it was via the defaults, I go to DEVELOP > SET DEFAULT SETTINGS and set them as I would like, but upon importation I still get the old settings.

What exactly am i doing wrong?

Oh an dto add to this, i am a little confused by the Filter tool to the bottom right of screen. It says "Save current settings as new pre-set", does that mean the import develop settings? I think I remember using this option when I first got LR and it accepted my very minimal changes (just sharpening and NR) and automates them when importing. I tried saving 'current' settings as a new pre-set but when I import nothing happens, it still defaults to the old 'pre-set' so to speak.

So I am a little confused, we have the use of defaults, the use of pre-sets and the use of the filters p-re-set ...... what should I be using?

To alter the Develop presets used on future imports, you select the develop preset (or none) on the import dialog.

To undo a preset that was applied at import on an existing image, in develop module, for that image, you go to the history step in the history panel and select the first step (Import) You may want to apply a General Zeroed Preset from the LR set to zero or return to neutral all the sliders and then apply a new preset on top of that.

There are filter presets which are like smart collections. These only apply to search filters in the Library module. It is locates along the top and has a drop down list bix which displaya a menu of search filters the bottom menu item is "Save Current Settings as a new Preset..." It will create a new search filter preset based upon the columns chosen in the Search filter bar. This preset is not the same as a develop preset. In addition to Search Filter presets and Develop presets, there are Export presets. And similar ly there are Slideshow, print and web templates which are also called Presets. It can get confusing untill you understan that each type of preset is unique to the module that it is used in.

Thanks, I disabled the import dialogue so forfgot that was there, it is certainly easy to use.

My problem is essentially solved but in regards to the topic itself, I understand the Export pre-sets (been using them quite a while with success) but i am still a little vague regarding what the DEVELOP > SET DEFAULT SETTINGS does exactly?

The defaults are the Develop slider positions, unless they are overridden by a preset applied on Import.

In other words -- as shipped, most slider defaults are zero, Blacks is 5, the curve is Medium, Sharpness is 25, etc. You can make the defaults anything you want them do be.

But a Develop Preset applied on Import will override the defaults, for each control included in the preset. (Presets don't need to include settings for everything.)

OK so that is essentially what i want, I think anyway. In essence then i do not need the pre-set assigned on import, surely i just set the default as i like the sliders and then those settings are applied on import automatically without needing to apply pre-sets?

Exactly. That's what I do -- I set the defaults as I like them, and then occasionally apply a preset on top of them, but those presets generally set just a few sliders rather than all of them.

That's why I am confused though, I did that and then imported some images and it retained the previous defaults.

If you have Lightroom set to have different presets per camera or per ISO, then you'll have to update your defaults for each camera and/or ISO. That may explain why your new defaults didn't apply.
