Point LR to New External Cloned Disc...?

Wow, first time posting anywhere!

I've been keeping my photos on an external drive and making 2 backup clones (just in case). I'm on LR 2.1 Looks like the catalog is in Pictures/Lightroom on my Mac's internal drive. I just bought a larger external drive, made a clone of the main external that I've been using and want to make that my main drive. I've seen posts suggesting creating a new folder on an empty drive and dragging folders from LR into the new disc/folder. But I've already copied everything to the new disc.

Is there a way to just point LR to the new disc assuming that the LR catalog etc. will recognize all the same info?

To rename a disc in OS 1'.4 means to format it, eh? I guess then I could just create a new folder in the new disc (Library>New Folder) and have LR copy all by dragging and dropping from old disc to new.

No, you can just rename the Disk in the Finder.Do 'Get Info' on it and rename in that dialog.

Hi CoyotePixel, welcome to the forum! What a great place for your first post! ;)

If renaming the disc doesn't work for you, just double click on the LR catalog on the new drive to open it, and right click on the folders in the Folders panel and choose Update Folder Location and point to the new location.

Hi Victoria, Thanks for the warm welcome.

Yes, renaming would have been an issue as I have named the external discs as to their Maker (Lacie, etc).

I've got the catalog folder on my internal drive, photos on external drive. Are you suggesting moving that catalog folder to the external drive that I want as the primary drive so as to follow the rest of your suggestion? And, is right click on a mac same as option click?

The catalog can be wherever you like - I didn't realise it hadn't moved, so just open as normal.

And then, yes, right click = opt-click and choose Update Folder Location from the menu. If you've got a single parent folders underneath, it's easy still, as you'll only need to relocate that one and it'll do the rest.

Well done, glad it is sorted.

Now everything is on the external drive you should look at getting a backup drive in place, you did mention that you had other drives right?

On a Mac, try one of these as backup software:
SuperDuper,
Chronosync,
Carbon copy cloner.

BTW folks, on Mac, it's control-click to open that dialog.
