Last time I tried, LR would not import PNG files. Now I see it will.
I also held the belief that PNG files could not hold embedded metadata. Now I see they can.
Of course, its quite possible I've been wrong all this time.
But if this is a new feature, please can someone tell me when this changed?

It is true that previous versions did not support the PNG image format. I'm not sure at what version that changed but I think it was before LR6.

Image file formats consist of a data block (the image data) This is basically the same information whether the RGB data is in JPEG, TIFF, PNG. BMP or any other number of image formats. Describing the image block layout and parameters about how the data is organized in the file is the header block containing the metadata. It is the header block information that must be parsed to understand the image data block. PNG file format has always contained a descriptive header block. LR has not always had the necessary function to interpret the descriptive header.
