Picasa to LR

I'm going to be traveling for about a month later this year and will not be able to bring my Macbook with me. I will, however, have access to a Windows laptop to store and process images. I'd like to use Picasa to manage my images and then export them from there to LR when I finally get home.

My question is, can I do that and retain the ratings, keywords and (ideally) any changes I apply to the images in Picasa? I have to be able to do some processing of images in the field, but obviously don't want to have to reapply those in LR when I return.

Why use Picasa on one computer and Lightroom on the other!??

The simplest thing is to use Lightroom on that Windows machine and back home, use "Export as catalog" including negatives and in Lightroom on your MacBook, just "Import from Catalog" pointing to the Windows' catalog or a tranfered copy of it and the so-called negatives.

Brad, Denis -- The Win machine is small and not new, and I assume I could not run LR. It's one I'd be able to share w/ it's owner during the trip, but I don't own it and I'm a little reluctant to ask them to install something as resource intensive as LR. Picasa seems pretty lightweight by comparison and I'm familiar with the interface, so that was the first alternative that occurred to me. I will be shooting raw.

Why not use ImageIngester? Its pretty lightweight, and you can embed, rename and if desired, convert your files. Bring along FastStone Image viewer as a browser and you would have a nice lightweight package.

Denis - Thanks for the welcome msg. I'm looking forward to taking part in discussions here. Lightroom's a great tool, very powerful It really transformed my workflow.

Ken -- Thanks for the suggestions. I wasn't aware of either ImageIngester or Faststone. Both look like pretty viable solutions. In my quick run through the ImageIngester site I didn't see anything about rating or keywording individual images....do you know if those functions are supported?

I believe that key wording is, but I do not believe that ratings are. Marc, the program's author, hangs out at The Dam Forum, so you could see if there are posts over there that might provide some more insight.

Kelly, it can't be too hard to organize a quick trial to test your requirements. Just give your proposed Picasa workflow a dry-run with a handful of files.

I'm sure that's what you're hoping to avoid by asking here, but I haven't used Picasa in 18 months or so, so I don't have any up-to-date comments to make.
