pianfully slow LR

I use an iMac 1'.4.11, 2.1GHz, 2.5 RAM. My photos are stored on two external hard drives and that is where I import them from into LR 2.4. I click on a keyword on rhs of library view, when pics come up on bottom pane I click on one to edit and it takes ages from one to the next. I must be doing something wrong, anyone tell me what? It just takes an age to render.

Have you optimized your catalog, lately, ever?

If not, you could backup your catalog, and then go to the Catalog Setting preferences and select the Relaunch and Optimize button on the General tab.

See if that helps.

Few points
1. Your processor speed is ok
2. Your 2.5 gig of RAM is probably not enough - dependant of what other software/applications you run at the same time
3. Your external drives are connected via USB, firewire? This matters a great deal.
4. What speed are your HD's, importantly the HD you have the ircat on


I have just discovered what LR is capable of with a new machine. I went from Pent4 3.4ghz, 2RAM, 54''rpm drive, USB external connections to a new laptop and the difference in stark.

I ran LR on 2G RAM and it was fine as long as I wasn't running much else and doing multi threaded stuff like exporting etc all at the same time. My first guess would be the Hardrives. If they are USB how are they connected (directly / hub) and what else do you have connected to the USB ports / hub ?

Hiya Brad

Are you suggesting that an external firewire hard drive is faster or slower than USB...? reason I ask is that I am looking for a replacement external hard drive for my 2 * 5''GB models. I would prefer to purchase a firewire on if these have better performance.

OK, let's define painfully slow. If you look at my setup you will find P4 2.4G, 1g ram, 2 x 72''rpm hard drives, XP Pro SP3. With background stuff running I'm left with approx 525 Meg of Ram.

Now as you would expect this is a little slow with a bit of lag in some features, but it is not PAINFULLY SLOW, it's quite workable.

If you have better than this setup (Who doesn't :D ) and have a painfully slow operation then I suggest that you look at your computer setup. How much is running in the background, working from a slow external drive, etc etc.

That's my 2c worth.

Firewire 8'' is much faster than USB 2.

OK, thanks. But I have a Macbook and alas, only FW4'' I think. Ah well... ::)

FW4'' and USB2 are similar in speed, USB2 has a slightly faster burst rate specification but I found that copying large files on FW4'' was still faster than USB2. It appears that the constant throughput seems higher. You have to watch what else you plug in when using USB2 also. I plugged a USB1.1 device into a USB2 hub and everything connected to that hub dropped down to USB1.1 speeds which are very slow indeed.
