Photoshop CS4 will not open images from Lightroom 2.1

I recently upgraded to Photohops CS4. The problem I am experiencing is that when I edit an image in Lightroom 2.1, Photoshop CS4 opens up with no image. I haven't figured out what's wrong yet.

In the mean time, I left Photoshop CS3 installed and need to know how to Tell Lightroom 2.1 to open in Photoshop CS3 rather than in CS4.

I know that I can set the set the external editor to Photoshop CS3 but that doesn't help if I want to open an image as a Smart Object. Smart Objects (as well as merges) will always attempt to open in CS4.

I searched the registry but found no evidence of Lightroom 2.1 primary edit program there.

I finally figured it out.

If you want Photoshop CS3 to be your primary external editor (after installing Photoshop CS4), you must change the following registry key entries:

Note: This is assuming you installed Photoshop in the default location. Editing the registry is risky!


1) Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\Photoshop.exe

2) Double-click on the [Default] icon and type in the following:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Photoshop.exe
(It was C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Photoshop.exe)

3) Double-click on the [Path] icon and type in the following:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\
(It was C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\)

Save these entries. Open Lightroom and your primary external editor will be Photoshop CS3.


Note again: Editing the registry is risky! Don't do it if you're not comfortable with this.
Note 2: This is the registry entry for the location of Photoshop. It may have an adverse effect elsewhere.

Lightroom to open CS4....
Lightroom click edit, Preferences, External Editing first box CS3, 2nd box external editor click Choose fined CS4 in Adobe folder, click Photoshop CS4. Click OK.
Go to lightroom at the top click photo tab, click edit in, you will see CS3 and CS4 click the one you require. Job Done..
If you remove CS3 and look in L/R Preferences, External Editing, CS4 will go to/replace CS3 in first box, change 2nd one down to what ever you like.
