Hi

I don't have CS3, and the reason i don't is i bought LR.

Now, with the new capabilities that are only available via CS3, i am left in a pickle.

I don't get to enjoy these features unless i purchace CS3?

mmmmm

You could alway do what I did. Spend a couple of hundred grand raising kids, private school, college. Then you can get one of them to buy it for you with the academic discount. :D

Sorry, off-topic, but I couldn't resist. (Bad Moderator! slap-on wrist)

Which capabilities are you particularly wanting?

The idea of not having to have the image converted to a Tiff (smart objects) and HDR capability spring to mind.

I understand that these are only available in CS3 and that CS2 does not have that capability, but was kinda hoping that LR would have HDR, lens distortion correction along with decent noise reduction. It's almost, for me, a case where i don't need PS.

Also, i assume that i will still be able to export to CS2 with my current workflow - Tiffs.

Brad

I believe that you could open raw files into CS2 as smart objects. The version of ACR that CS2 uses is not compatible with LR though. Also, in CS2 you couldn't apply filters to smart objects. Photoshop CS3 added smart filters in which you could apply filters to smart objects and retain editability. There's some other new stuff in CS3, but the smart filters alone made it worth the upgrade to me.

I do have CS2 and did not upgraded yet (out of $$$ spent in priority for more important Lightroom stuff: Backup). So, for now, as they at least increased the limit from 1'''' to 3'''' pixels, I will do my stitchs and import after that for now. Maybe in a version 3.' we will get Stitch and HDR BUT! (There is alway one BUT):

But... Even if they do this, I do not expect Lightroom to ever become a designer's tool for example. I mean that Photoshop beared its name in the past but that name is not any more appropriate with the birth of Lightroom. "InDesign" and "Illustrator" already stole a part of what "Photoshop" is now so, I am not sure how I would rename Photoshop (PhotoTweak? PhotoTricks? No. "Imaging" can do but another Trademark already own it).
Mainly, I meant that Lightroom is not to be a "Graphics" application BUT a "Photographic" one.

That said, I too hope for Stitch and HDR within Lightroom. But they already fullfilled so many of our wishes. I am ready to wait for 3.'... It is already so incredible that they (Adobe) gave us non-destructive local adjustments compared to what a close competitor did; I am amazed!

 I am adding a slap!
The reason is that I have to edit my tip on multiuser Lightroom about "Licence Agreements". As a moderator, here you have a chance to slap me back being also off topic. ;)

The reason it is PSCS3 for the export as Smart Object is not something with LR but CS2 and earlier lack the 'hooks' for LR to pass of as a Smart Object instead of Tiff or PSD.

You can still Export as Original and use an Export Action to open is PSCS2 as a Smart Object.

I think that CS2 is limited to ACR3.x from my recent readings.

When I was playing with opening files straight into PS from the LR2 beta, I noticed that any settings that weren't compatible with ACR4 were ignored. I was wondering if ACR 3 would apply settings that were carried over into ACR4 and just ignore the new settings or not. Also, if you have a camera that is not supported in ACR3 then you're SOL on raw smart objects in CS2.

Any settings for which you can't see sliders in ACR3 is ignored, with the exception of highlight recovery and fill light (you can't see sliders, but it will process those adjustments) which were added in 3.7. This means that your files could render differently than you expected.

Beta 2.' does give you the option of letting LR render the file (with all adjustments) and then passing the resulting image over to CS2. This has the benefit that it renders with the latest engine and in exactly the way you expect.
