Photo renaming: how to retrace original number suffix

Until recently I renamed my RAW photos as follows: YYYYMMDD_customtext_Sequence('1)

But I now think it would be better to have the original number suffix in the filename (i.e. IMG_3829.jpg, so I want it to be YYYYMMDD_customtext_3829). My problem is that it is not possible to retrace this number with RAW files in Lightroom. For JPEG shots it is possible.

Does anybody know a way to find these original number suffixes back? Is there other software, or can it be found in metadata or anywhere else?

If you've renamed them within Lightroom, the Library Metadata pane has "Original Filename" in the "All" preset.

Thanks for your reply. I did rename all images in Lightroom but the 'original filename' shows the current filename. This is probably because I had the images renamed, and later my computer suffered a crash so I had to re-import all photos. I'm afraid Lightroom uses the filename on import as the 'original filename'. Will have to find another way to sort this out now.

Select them in Grid mode, go to the Rename dialog, and choose Original Filename.

This is true. I get around this by renaming my images to "hhmmss_nnnn" during import using the tokens "hour","minute","second" and "Filename number suffix". I can then sort by filename to avoid LR's sometimes strange collating sequence when capture time is involved.

Most cameras don't even record the split seconds in their metadata, so Lightroom can't tell that there's a difference. Unfortunately it doesn't always appear to import in exactly the same order, which means that sequence numbers are sometimes out of sequence for split second shots. In this case it's best to import with their existing file names, sort by file name, and then rename into a sequence order.
