Performance issues

Hi fellow Lightroom users

I'm trying to collect some older pictures (from 2''7 & 2''8) and have major performance issues. Are there any tips on solving this. (Example of a problem: changing a filter from 2 to 3 starts takes 2 minutes);


My Setup
Vista 64 SP2 / Lightroom 64 on Quad Core 2.4 Ghz 8GB internal memory
2 screens (Eizo Color Edge CG211 and HP2335)
3 * 75' GB SATA disks
Disk 1: OS, catalog & cache files
Disk 2: 555 GB images (& other stuff like documents)
Disk 3: 16' GB images (& some other stuff like backups from websites)

I backup frequently to an 1 TB disk via USB. Normally powered off. Lightroom doesn't "know" about this (slow) disk.

Lightroom stores about 56.''' images. I store images in YYYY/MM/DD directory structure.

When I look at performance monitor I can see the disks are 1''% loaded. CPU is NOT 1''% and plenty of spare memory. I do have anti-virus software (Symantic endpoint protection)

I’m thinking to move the Catalog & cache file to a really fast disk; eq Western Digital Raptor of 73GB (about 75 Euro); the catalog is les then 1GB; the cash files are at this moment about 13 GB (39k files 31k directories) so 75GB is plenty of space; Still a lot cheaper than getting a complete new system. Every weekly I reorganize my catalog.


Is there anything I could do to get better performance (EQ split the catalog: which I really do not like because searching a picture could mean I need to search more than 1 catalog). Obvious I could buy a faster computer; but I prefer not. (especially the CPU is not 1''%)

Hoop you can solve my "little" problem.

I forgot:
- When in Library mode I have navigator window & Histogram closed
- I added the directory of the catalog & photo & underlaying drectories to be ignored by Symantec (Anti-virus software).

Well, I think you've answered your own question. If the disk throughput is maxed out, there's your bottleneck.

Try disabling the antivirus, or at the very least excluding Lr's data locations from AV realtime scanning. (Oops, never mind, I see you did that, might want to try disabling it entirely for a test)
Try disabling Windows background search indexing, I forget it's name. It's been mentioned in a very recent thread.

I think it must be something in your specific setup, I'm in roughly the same situation, both catalog and system wise, and am quite happy with response times.

Thanks; I will look into the indexer (it was active indeed)

When the indexer it’s not active (like now) performance is slow but still workable. Completely turning off my AV is I will try as a very last option. (I also make sure I select all images I possible need, let LR do his/here job (rendering previews) while I get some cofee or 2).

I would try running the optimise catalog option. It looks like it could be a database issue. If the indexes in the database are not optimised it will need to read more data from disk and thus slow the whole operation down.

Hmmm, good point Nik. I thought I read in Jeroen's post that he (she?) had optimized, but I don't see it now.

Forgot to mention; I make sure I optimize it (at least) every week (just before it makes the backup of the catalog);

If operations are slow (like now) i do it every day. I also reset my computer every day.

No rermarks on spliting the catalog (this makes me happy)

Any figures know about max size of catalog (in number of photo's/keywords)

Hi Jeroen,

Aside from using a very fast disk for your catalog I would try to put the catalog and preview files on separate disks (don't ask me how, I've read somewhere that it should be possible). This could speed up access to the catalog. Also, do you write XMP files automatically? If so, this could also impact performance.

Don't have any other suggestions.

Btw, I see you are from the lovely city of Amersfoort (as am I). And your website doesn't show.
