Painting out a layer

I am trying to paint out a section of the top layer of an over exposed stained glass window to reveal the properly exposed 2nd layer window. Using the black brush, what I get is shown in the attached image, the white brush removes the work of the black brush which is what I would expect. This is really simple stuff, I have done it plenty of times in the past with no trouble. Where am I going wrong please?

Looking at the color sampler it seems you are not painting with a pure black brush, but a very dark grey brush. Apart from that, I’m not sure what I am supposed to see in this screenshot.

Along those lines, also check the Opacity of the brush itself, up in the options bar, and make sure it’s 100%.
