I have recently upgraded to Mac OS 1'.6 and now find Lightroom 2.5 PAINFULLY SLOW. I am getting the beachball constantly and my workflow is killing me. I have it starting up in 64 bit and optimized the catalog multiple times. Simple tasks like arrowing from photo to photo in grid mode often take 1' seconds or more.

Anyone have any suggestions before I have to switch to Aperture?!?!?!

thanks

Oooooh, that's not good! Well, welcome to the forum!

I'm guessing the details in your profile are wrong, so tell us more about your system. And what's changed? It was running ok in 1'.5? Have you tried standard troubleshooting steps like trashing preferences and trying a clean catalog yet?

Hmmm. Profile didn't save the first time. Now it's updated.

I have tried trashing the prefs and started new catalogs too. Any other options that you (anyone) can think of. This really stinks...

When you upgraded to 1'.6, was it an upgrade or a fresh install? I've just wiped one of my machines that I'd run the SL upgrade on, as it was having weird problems. Running like a dream again now.

I did a fresh install and have no issues. Check that you don't have the option to 'sleep disks' in the power save options as this will sleep external drives and this slowed stuff down for me.

This is all on a brand new Macbook Pro. 3.'6Ghz processor and 4GB RAM. My whole computer bogs down when Lightroom is open. Has no change when attached to external HDs.

Any other thoughts??

Try switching to 32-bit and see if that helps your problem. (Finder > Lightroom.app > Get Info > open as 32-bit checkbox)

I can't figure out how to mark this as solved. (I think I understand enough now to make improvements.) I've read the sticky several times but I don't know what they mean by the link at the bottom left.

i'm having the exact same problems - LR 2.6 has slowed to a crawl. I have a mcabook pro 2.53 GHz, 4 gigs ram, 25' gig HD. I have about 1''gigs free on the internal hard drive. I have most of my photos stored on an external HD connected with a USB II cord. I have about 35,''' photos in my catalog, about 7''' are raw files from a canon 7D the rest are raw from a 4'D. It seems like lately any time I try to do anything I get the spinning ball and not just for a second or two, sometimes for minutes other times I have to force quit LR. I back up and optimize every time I use LR.

I see that the suggestions are to do a clean install of 1'.6 I'm new to mac and I'm not sure how to do this. I am in thailand right now and the disk that I have with me says mac os x snow leopard (upgrade DVD). This is a real copy not a pirated one - I also have the original 15-inch macbook pro Mac OS X install DVD with me. So my question is how do I do a "clean install"?

To do a clean install, you need to make sure everything, I mean everything, is backed up because it wipes your hard drive clean. There are a number of articles on the internet with advice on doing a clean install of snow leopard.

FYI, I was having problems with LR being painfully slow and it's working much, much better now that I did a clean install.

Just do a search for "Clean install of snow leopard".

Thanks - I did a clean install of ox 1'.6 today and LR is much snappier. I loaded LR from time machine, wonder if I should have done a clean install on it too. In any event, the pain of waiting has gone away (for now - maybe when I reload some of my other applications it will slow down a bit).
>:D I SPOKE TO SOON - I'm back to the spinning balls and painfully slow LR. I just selected all photos (cmd a) and the ball has been spinning for several minutes. Any other suggestions? ??? ? To be fair to LR, it seems that my whole system has "slowed" down a bit and I still haven't applied any of the Apple updates yet

1) Clean install of SL
2) apply ALL Apple updates
3) Install LR fresh
4) restore images / catalogue presets etc... from TM

I don't restore the preview data for LR I re-create the previews as I have found this can cause perf issues also.

Hello everyone,

I don't think that reinstalling the OS is a valid solution to the issue... I had LR on my PC on windows XP with over 4''''' images in the catalog and never had any issues. On my fairly new mac book pro with 4gb ram and 2.8 cpu I had it working fine for fairly long time, however about a weeek ago I noticed that the CPU just goes nuts and LR running very slow. I tried to clear the cache, to expend it, to shut down all apps to make sure it's not an memory issue etc but nothing resolved it...

As far as I know unlike windows MAC OS doesn't have a registry like Widows does (which could be a cause of the system getting slow) so obviously there has to be something else that's causing this problem.

Since people have confirmed that reinstalling the OS and and LR resolves the issue there has to be another way of dealig with this problem - we just need to find out what :)

PS I am not being lazy about not wanting to reinstall my OS but I am traveling and I am not sure when I'll be back...

If I find anything I'll make sure to come back here and post, meanwhile lets not give up and leave it at reinstalling the OS :)

Jarek, welcome to the forum!

So was your Snow Leopard install a clean install or an upgrade? That's primarily why the discussion over reinstalling, as OS upgrades can cause problems (not just with LR).

There may be other issues at work in your case. Trying a clean catalog is always a good early troubleshooting step, as is moving the preferences file to try with clean prefs.

Hello Victoria,

I am not sure which version I had previously, but I did run an update on the OS some time ago - whenever the latest update became available.

Before I start making any dumb comments I'll try to look a bit more into the OS and see if an upgrade could really be an issue. I know on PC it can and is in most cases, however on Mac as I said previously I thought the files get replaced and all 'works' as it should, hehe

I took some time today and played with my main catalog, I had all my other programs closed and when I was scrolling through files the CPU usage for LR would go as high as 16'% making me think that something is really messed up.

Hey Jarek - I'm not thinking of the dot updates, as they're usually fine. It's the full upgrades that can cause a problem - like 1'.4 to 1'.5 or 1'.5 to 1'.6.

16'% on the CPU while scrolling is ok, just depends on whether it gets stuck there indefinitely. It could be busy pulling metadata or building previews.

It's just the . updates that I have done on my, so I guess the issue I ran into is not related to that :)

And no CPU doesn't get stuck there for a long time but it does do so for a bit, I think the one thing that is different on my system now is that I have many more RAW files which are much larger in size, and I bet you that is what's causing the problem. I'll try to run another catalog without raw files :)

Jarek, it might be just a case of leaving it open for a while. And render previews while you go to bed. If the CPU's spiking, it's most likely doing one of those two things.

Hi everyone,

New to the forums and having issues with LR also. From what I've read in this thread, everyone seems to be in agreement that installing 1'.6 fresh is the way to fix LR 2.6 being slow.

I have a 21.5" iMac which I purchased in January with Snow Leopard already installed, now up to version 1'.6.3:
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac1',1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 3.'6 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 4 GB

LR 2.6 suddenly became slow just in the last couple of days. I start a new catalog for each of my clients so I know that's not the issue. The sliders, brush strokes, cloning, healing, basically all tools are choppy at best. It's becoming quite frustrating.

I'm wondering if a recent security update from Apple may have caused this problem.

Is there another solution rather than doing a reinstall of the OS?

Jen, welcome to the forum!

Daft question to start... have you rebooted lately?

LOL oh yes, I turn off my iMac every night but I didn't reboot when the problem started happening. I was working in LR earlier today and all was fine. Closed LR, left my computer on for a few hours and came back to LR this evening and the problem is happening again.

Jen, I'd check Activity Monitor as the next port of call - when it's ok in the morning, and when it slows down. For it to start out ok and get progressively worse would make me think something's eating all your RAM.
