In some of my older files the images now look like they're out of focus in both Develop and Library. I can't figure out what's going on and how to ix them.

Two quick thoughts. Is the drive where your images are located online, and have you tried to generate new previews for them?

Do the pixel dimensions in the Metadata Panel look about right for whatever camera took the images? (multiply the two numbers in the dimensions and the product should be about the rated megapixels for the camera . For example, my Canon 5d Mark III is a 22.3mpx camera and the pixel dimensions are 5760 x 3840 whose propduct is 22,118,400 which is close to 22.3mpx. If the product is way smaller than it should be, that could be your problem.
