Hi! I am not a Lightroom user yet, but I would like to be so, if Lightroom supports my way of working. I hope, that someone in here can tell me, if it does.

I have a lot of photos stored on 3 external USB-disks. The photos are organized in several folders that make it easy for me to find my way around. It just makes good sense to me to do it like this. And I do not have enough space on my laptop to store all the photos on the internal harddrive anyway.

Now I want to use Lightroom to make further organization of the photos. I want to give them tags, stars and color codes to make it easy to find specific photos sorted by one ore more of these criteria. I do not want Lightroom to move the photos into new folders. But is this possible? Will I be able to search through all my photos even though none of the external disks are attached to the computer? And then, when I find the photo needed, I can attach the relevant external harddisk to get the photo.

Do you get my idea? Is this possible with Lightroom?

Yours kindly,
Mikael (Denmark)

Hi Mikael from Denmark, there are a few Danes here!!
Yes you can keep your photos on external drives. LR will not move them unless you ask LR to do that. LR is a database application and keeps links to the files, if you move files around between folders it is best to do that in LR so that the links are not broken.
If I recall correctly and I cannot check at the moment I think you can do ratings etc when images files are off-line. You cannot make Develop changes though.

I'll just confirm this, while Geoff's out chasing something beautiful in Kiwiland.

Mikael, you do not tell us if you are Mac based or Windows based...

One thing you will have to take great care of is giging your different drives different names. The point is that if you plug one one day working with Lightroom and another one the next day, then Lightroom may tell you that the photos are missing! If on Windows, you will have to take care that each drive will always appear with the same different letter for each drive!

e.g.: DriveName Letter
Ext1 E:
Ext2 F:
Ext3 G:

Further information

Hi!
I am working on a MacBook Pro OS X and my drives are from Iomega. They are USB 2.' drives with the names NIKON '1, NIKON '2 and NIKON '3.

Should that be enough to make this work?

Mikael

Mikael, that should work just fine - ain't Macs wonderful!!:lol:

Oh, yes! I have been using Mac since June last year - and I just love it! And I have been using Nikon since 1983 - and just love that too! Now I can begin to organize all my digital photos the way I hoped to do - I'm a lucky man!

Very lucky !!
Now how do we get a Ferrari???

I'm a fan - not an owner! But they are some of the most beautiful cars, and even if they are so bad in Formula One these days, I am still a big fan! :-)

I have - not surprisingly - a lot of photos from Formula One!
